I'm pretty new to the gecko community and when I was searching to get my second gecko I saw really high prices for aptors and raptors. What are their genetics? How many years of breeding does it take to create them because they cost so much compared to other geckos. Im really interested in the genetics of geckos. Its way cooler than the stuff you learn in school XD! Thanks everybody.

An A.P.T.O.R. is basically a sunglow in my book. However it is a little different, he used a patternless strip, which is obtained by breeding a strip to a reverse strip. He also wanted them to have a carrot-tail, and a carrot-head. Some have the giant gene to them, and others are banded, or jungle, instead of patternless. But pretty much the names says it all.

Albino Patternless Tremper ORange.

They are supposed to be patternless by definition, although he bred other pattern phases into them. Then the Albino and Tremper are the same part, that he used a Tremper albino. Then the orange, part, is just what color he wants them to be.

So an A.P.T.O.R. is three categories of thing to me.

Line Breed Traits

• Carrot-head
• Carrot-tail
• Tangerine Body Color

The pattern phases

• Patternless Strip (Strip x Reverse strip Breeding)
• Banded
• Jungle

Then the actual genes

• Tremper Albino (Recessive)
• Then in some of them Giant (Co-Dominate)

The R.A.P.T.O.R. is basically the same thing. But instead it has red eyes. This is the result of the eclipse gene. And you can get A.P.T.O.R.S. form breeding R.A.P.T.O.R. x R.A.P.T.O.R. and R.A.P.T.O.R. from breeding an A.P.T.O.R. to an A.P.T.O.R.

This is because the eye gene (Eclipse, which is a black eye, when not combined with an albino, and ruby when combined with an albino gene) in the R.A.P.T.O.R. is not fully understood. The un-locker for it is thought to be the patternless strip. And to me this seems correct. So it can just randomly appear. However you will have a better chance of producing an R.A.P.T.O.R. from breeding two together. This is because the gene for eclipse eye, acts recessive, although not simple recessive.

The pattern phases

• Patternless Strip (Strip x Reverse strip Breeding)
• Banded
• Jungle

This is the other thing you have to understand. The pattern phases have been breed, and re-breed together, so many times, it is crazy. So you really have idea of what you will get, if you breed one strip phases, R.A.P.T.O.R., or A.P.T.O.R. to another one. Most of them will be patternless, however there are some that are jungle, or banded. I have seen the jungle and banded phases called many things. Such as R.A.T.O.R., Banded R.A.P.T.O.R., Jungle R.A.P.T.O.R. Tangerine Jungle Ruby-Eye Albino, etc.

It took me 6 months to learn this morph probably, and it is really very simple, the main problem I had with it, was the marketing. It is just all over the place. But really the only thing you have to worry about with them is the genes. Everything just takes care of itself.

Nicholas, thank you for explaining the RAPTOR genetics. You made it very understandable. I have been trying to figure it our for a while now and it is hard to find good information.

On a side note I posted in another thread a genetic what would I get if question. I think you explained it here. I have the following pairing.

Tremper Snow het stripe X Tremper reverse stripe

Would I possibly get a Tremper Snow Patternless? if so, then the next year if I breed two Tremper Snow Patternless together there would be the possiblity of a Super Raptor?

If you breed a tremper snow “Het” Strip, to a tremper reverse strip. I’m not 100% sure you would get a designer patternless snow (Designer patternless is just a patternless strip) the reason for this, is the strip phases are extremely unpredictable as far as I know. When saying “het” strip all it is saying is that one of the parents had the strip gene. The trait is truly line breed, but can pop up, now and again. But since the only real difference between strip and reverse strip, is reverse strip has color to it, and strip doesn’t (both are dorsal strips, and I’m not 100% sure on why breeding them together, give you a thinner strip, somebody else might have to elaborate on this) you may be something close. Most designer patternless seems to be red. So I’m not exactly sure what you would even classy those offspring as. So I would say what you will end up getting instead of a tremper snow patternless is

50% Snow Tremper, with odd jungle, or strip patterns
And
50% Tremper, with odd jungle, or strip patterns

However there is a VERY, VERY, VERY small percentage of you getting what you want from the pair. But I mean extremely little.

If so, then the next year if I breed two Tremper Snow Patternless together there would be the possibility of a Super Raptor?

Okay for this question, lets say for argument sake, that you did get a 2 tremper snow designer patterns, and bred them together. Technically you would have a chance at a super R.A.P.T.O.R. However I don’t know how often the gene unlocks itself (eclipse eye gene) So again if you somehow beat the odds, this year by getting two patternless tremper snows, and then breed them together again next year, and somehow unlocked the eye gene (again no idea how much this actually happens) then technically you would have a super R.A.P.T.O.R. However I think you best bet would be to buy a R.P.T.O.R. and a Super Snow Tremper Albino, then breed those together. Getting yourself

100% Mack Tremper, het Eclipse

Then breeding those back together and getting a 6.25% Chance of getting yourself a super R.A.P.T.O.R.

An RAPTOR was a red eyed APTOR.It is made by a cross between snow and a APTOR.
RAPTOR is Red -eye Albino Tremper ORange

Thanks again Nicholas. I'm trying to figure out my pairings for next year and your explanation definately helped. :main_thumbsup:
