So, I wanted to fill my 20 gallon tank. So I stopped by a reptile store and asked what they had, they suggested the Gecko so I went for it. I have read all of the online basic care stuff, so now I want to find out what gecko owners "really" do. I did the small critter thing for years and at least in those circles there is the "what the books say to do," and what "we really do."

Is it the same for these guys?

Currently he's in a 20 Gal with sand, a light, a small plate with water, the light box as his habitate since I fogot to buy a real one.

I have crickets and the calcium poweder and currently the crickets have "broc, carrots, cheese, and a piece of plum (they are well feed crickets). I only have 15 of them.

The gecko is a Lepord gecko and roughly 3 - 4 inches long. I know it is a young one. I guess the sand is a bad thing, so I plan on covering the sand with paper towels for now.

My biggest question right now is food. I read on one site that they like fruit, so do you feed yours fruit and if so how much? I am use to pets where I give them a huge variety, just in case... but I guess with these guys its a little different. Besides the usual pet store bug list is there anything else? I'm guessing outside bugs are frowned upon since you don't know what they might be carrying? I am pretty sure the reptile store I got him from just has the usual crickets (which I have but nothing else currently), mealworms, etc.

I am looking forward to a new little pet! The only reptile I have had was a short stit with a turtle when I was a kid (It started to molt, freaked me out, and I gave it to a friend of my mom's. My pet keeping morals are a lot better now).

Congratulations on your new pet and welcome to GF! It would be a good idea to read the caresheets that you can find by clicking on "articles/caresheets" at the top of this page. They were all written by experienced gecko keepers. The things to think about at the moment (and you'll get more info from the caresheets) is that in general leopard geckos don't need light but do need belly heat so most of us used under tank heaters. They generally do not eat fruit or veggies. In addition to crickets you can feed mealworms, superworms, silkworms, roaches (not the common kind, but tropical roaches like dubia) and somewhat less common worms like butterworms and hornworms. Some people feed their adult geckos pinky mice though I am reluctant to do this in case the geckos refuse them (then what am I gonna do?).
