OK, for those of you who don't know my dog, Abbie, she is a 3 year old A.P.B.T. and she normally is just the sweetest girl to everyone and everything. Well, the past couple of weeks, she has become fearful of other people, and for no reason. People will come over to pat her and she runs away from them, even people that she used to LOVE to be near. Nothing has changed to make this happen. She still loves a few people, like my Ex Bobby, and the guy I work for, she can't get enough of him, it's so cute how she follows him around everywhere he goes :)

Anyhoo, anybody know why she would act like this all of a sudden?

My best guess is that something probbably triggered the reaction, unintentionally... for example, she may have been bitten or stung by something while someone she's currently acting fearful of was petting her. Usually the dog then associates the negative stimulus to whoever or whatever is closest to it- it's basic instinct. Usually they end up conditioning themselves out of the fearful behavior, since obviously it's not going to happen consistantly... being that i've never met or seen your dogs behavior, this was just the first thing that came to mind. Best wishes.

She is actually starting to act normal agian, very weird, one of the times she was acting fearful was when someone who was smoking was trying to pet her, so I don't think she likes cigarette smoke (Smart Girl!). 2 of the other times the people were coming out of the laundry room, and she is afraid of the washer and dryer, so maybe she was acting afraid of the machines not the people. My friend came over last night and she smokes, the last time she was here Abbie acted a little fearful of her, well last night she said that she sprayed herself with some Febreez to try to get rid of the Smoke smell, and Abbie was not afraid of her at all.

Abbie's so smart. She's spent so much time at the vet already she knows she doesn't want lung cancer! I pretend like I'm afraid of the laundry room too so that's normal I think. ;P

Hi Jeanne

It sounds like Abbie is going through some rather perplexing behavioral changes

It's so hard to second guess behavioral changes like that -what their triggers are and why they happen

I wish you both the very best I and hope that she gets back to being "normal" soon

Sounds like a fear phase, dogs have many in their lives, some later then others.

They become very scared by normal things around them, every day life.

The best thing to do is for you to show no fear or hesitation in situations when she acts afraid. Distract her from the fear and give her a few treats so she knows that it's okay.

Maybe start having people give her treats when they come over. And if someone is coming in that smells different then she is used to, then should could just be weirded out because they don't smell like they normally do. Have people come over and hand them some Cut up Hotdogs.. And hand those to her. Maybe she will see that these people aren't there to hurt her, and no need to be afraid! They Give her AWESOME Tasting stuff ;)

Abbie is not afraid of people and there is nothing wrong with her temperament. :main_laugh: She is just a very lovable and aloof dog that will one day be super affectionate to everyone she meets and the next day she will be indifferent, sometimes wary of people in the exact way cats act.
She was extremely indifferent towards people as a tiny pup and throughout most of her juvie years, even towards me and she was my dog!!! We used to call her a cat because that's just how she acted. She is a very eccentric dog!
