I have 2 leopard geckos that have abscesses. One has one. And one has two. I'm very sad and scared for them, but i'm not actually sure I can take them to a vet. If there a way I can take care of them myself? I don't want criticism on how i'm so cruel because I won't take them. If there is any way, I'd like to try. Please don't be mean. Helpful answers only, please :)

I'll shoot you if your mean: :rifle:

If you need help finding a QUALIFIED veterinarian, please email me and I will try to help you. I do not recommend trying to treat abscesses yourself. With warm-blooded mammals, abscesses can be lanced, drained, and treated with antibiotics depending on what is causing them. Reptiles (cold-blooded animals) develop abscesses that are hard and solid, and are usually encapsulated with quite a bit of surrounding tissue and/or vascular activity, usually requiring minor surgery to remove and analyze. Sometimes these lesions are actually cancerous, and without proper pathology being performed on them there is no treatment protocol. Other times, they are a result of environmental issues than can be remedied when identified properly.

I had a turtle who developed an abscess. You can do three things to ensure your geckos don't suffer.
1. Dip into your savings account and get them fixed at the vets.
2. Have them humanly euthanized
3. Donate them to your local humane society, they generally have a vet on site, or one they can contact.

There is nothing you can do at home that would be humane, or even legal.

You should only get a pet if you are able to take it to the vet when it needs it. That's not being rude, its just the truth. Please consider this when purchasing animals, they depend on you to give them the best care available.

Doctor, Doctor, send me the news.

Think legal should be scratched out.
I Believe as long as it is your animal you may treat it.
I gave my schnauzers shots.
I removed grubs from tropical fish and treated for disease.
I've done some gecko stuff, worms, remove sperm plugs,
assist in feeding, MBD assistance.
In each case it was my own animals.
Can't treat others or you need to be a vet.
I delivered a calf from my own cow,
with the help of the Vet. (Big Calf)...[Big Vet]
Now that I think on it he actually removed it
with the help of "Old Red".
I guess I was the one taking photos.
I have found out some items need not be taken to a vet.
I have found out I regretted taking some.
A little searching on the net....and free advice even from
veterinary students, on college forums can get you through
SOME problems.
Take care. HJ

I lived on a farm my whole childhood.
Birthing calves = Legal.
Lancing an abscess without knowlegde or pain management = ILLEGAL!

I think your under the delusion that this world cares more about a cow then a gecko lol. Yeah, no. Atleast not legally, personaly yes. However you can kill your gecko for no good reason and theres a slim chance anyone would do anything about it, some aspcas are good about those things though.

I have also treated some of my small animals myself at times. Canaries are a prime example. The stress alone of driving them to the vet as well as removing them from the necessary heat source when they are under the weather can kill them in a few hours. Vet visits have cost me the lives of two valuable birds by probing them, administering oxygen and injecting subcutaneous antibiotics. Of course they're going to tell you "bring them in immediately"!
On the other hand I have rescued three depleted, eggbound hens over the course of the years and one male with an infected legband foot by administering antibiotics, liquid calcium and force feeding vitamin B12, myself. The three hens were literally on death's doorstep - couldn't walk, fly or even stand. I also had an iguana die on me while being boarded at the vet. This is the honest to God's truth - and I'm religious.
When my dogs or cats are seriously ill (this rarely happens - knock on wood), they will be brought to a vet. For simpler things, or in the case with my birds, I usually attempt things myself. Haters, have at me. Bob

If your caught mistreating your gecko (someone would have to rat you out) you would get a fine and lose your gecko in this city.
Animal cruelty is illegal.

(I made a complaint to my local humane society about a pizza place down the road from me. He has a 55 gallon tank with 20 full grown koi in it. It is so PACKED that the koi at the bottom of the tank have grown clubs instead of fins. They crawl along the bottom because there is no room to swim. They made him clean that $^*& up.)

This discussion wasnt about not treated your animals to yourself when they have minor cuts or scratches.
These are abscesses. Treating an abscess at home when you have no idea what youre doing, and have no access to the proper medication - is wrong.

I think this is the best thing said. Bottom line is this, unless you can figure out exactly what is causing them in the first place, get the proper meds to treat the possible multipl infections..just use a vet. Id be intrested in hearing from the OP on the current condition.

I treat my animals for simple things, and I have a small 'pharmacy' of medications in my kitchen. I worked at a clinic, and went to school for this. I do not recommend guessing when it comes to the health of your animal. I would never administer any medication do any of my pets if I wasnt 100% confident.
I'm also confortable helping my frinds when their pets have problems, ONLY if I know whats going on.
If you have to second guess yourself, ask a vet! They go to school and spend a lot of money to know what they know. Most are required to keep up on their education and take classes throughout their career.

This is an excellent post.

I used to be a registered veterinary technician, and I spent some time working in a hospital in my area that sees a LOT of exotics. There are some things I feel confident enough to try and treat on my own (Though generally I call my vet for an opinion anyways) but an abscess is NOT one of those things. Prompt veterinary care will save you a lot of money and your geckos a lot of suffering in the long run.
