Has anyone used active acidophilus insted of probiotics. This product can be active for ever at room temp , probiotics has a room temp life of 4 to 6 hours. So if the gecko dosent eat it in that time frame its dead . This is the way it was explaid to me from the nutrition center. Randy

I thought they were the same thing.... i used acidophilus+ when my leo was on a hunger strike. It was a long time ago but i think it worked. I had to keep in refrigerated.

HI Randy, can you tell me what brand? I've often thought about using something like this for my reptiles, as I use it for my family and EVERY other critter I have owned...lol

I don't agree with this sort of thing at all. A healthy leopard gecko should not need this if it is being properly fed and the correct husbandry is in place. Proper care alone will keep the bowels working as they should.

Thank you for the brand name. I'll have to check into that!
Yes, acidophilus IS a probiotic...... BUt it's NOT the only one, there are MANY MANY strains of good gut bacteria.

It has always been my impression that the probiotics that are "shelf stable" aren't very good and are basically a dead product.

I personally use a product for myself called culturel, and it requires refrigeration. it's great at stopping a human case of the "trots":main_thumbsup:

Why even bother with anything like that... Heat, a good supplemented diet, hydration, and a no stress environment is all you need to keep a healthy leo...

I can see if your gecko has had problems digesting their meals even with proper heating that these supplements would be required but I have to agree with Stuart and Gregg: the basics should be all you need for a healthy gecko. :)

However, if I have failed to keep my gecko healthy, and it has been on bacteria destroying antibiotics which destroy both the good and bad bacteria in it's system, then once the round of antibiotics is finished, I think re-introducing good bacteria (probiotics) to it's system is a good idea.

In that situation yes it would be justified, what I don't agree with however is the day to day use of probiotics as standard procedure.

YES......... but.......it's a wonderful immune enhancer for sick or convalescing creatures.

I Do also know of people who use it daily, and give it to their "warm blooded" pets daily as well.

So is it necessary? With humans, you betcha!... who do you know that eats a perfect diet?> and who is to say WHAT is the perfect diet?> Sure there are some common sense things, eat your veggies, drink lots of clean water ect ect ect... but then there are "other" diet train of thoughts... vegans, vegetarians, macro biotic, raw, ect ect ect ect.....

WOW, that got off topic :)

Alright, my personal opinion, is it CAN be a good supplement for geckos.
Not daily mind you, but when needed. I've also NEVER heard of a probiotic overdose.

I agree 100%, however, the person asking the question is talking about using it as a supplement "just like vitamins"...

Even in the case you talk about, it is still not always needed...

On second thought, I AM giving probiotics daily. I use Rephashy calcium plus and it has several strains of "good gut flora":main_thumbsup:

Forgot about that.

Again, I don't think it can hurt, is it necessary daily, probably not.

So Randy. It sounds Like you are giving the Probiotics to your feeders? Is this correct? Do you also give it directly to your animals from time to time?
