not everybody likes the idea of mixing the subspecies.
for fresh bloodlines, you could also mixe them with wildcaught/ F1 normal leopards

Very true, but here it is not easy to obtain F1 or wild caught.

Ok here are some things about the subspecies/ locales

The ones that I have are from europe and were sold to us as F1 ( F1= first generation born in captivity, and parents are wild caught). And it wasn't easy to get them over here.

The reasoning for getting the F1's from Europe were to do the 3 following things.

1) To keep the lines pure. for all of the purest out there, give them pure subspecies/locales. The problem with this though is the interest. we have had pure E. m. fasciolatus and E. m. Afghanicus for sale. and they just didn't sell. I'm not saying this is about money, but I dont want to breed lots of subspieces/locales to just whole sale them out. its not fair to the people that pay for the pure stuff. So we are not breeding alot for pure this year. we will have a limited avalibilty. because we have other projects that we are focusing on.

2) To out cross and make some genetic traits stronger. every one knows that some traits have some problems (Enigma, super snows, and R.A.P.T.O.Rs) by useing F1s from Europe we wanted to make the lines that are in the US stronger. some of these traits we can see the finshed product in one generation some take two. all of the out crossed geckos will be labled as such. it is not something that i will hide that i am doing.

i do not see any thing wrong with useing E.m.afganicus or E.m.fasciolatus with our US stock because 2 things. in the end both are just locales. they are both Eublepharis macularius. and second im sure that some where along the line they have been put into the lines anyway, when leopard geckos were first imported.

3) The chance to pop out something weird. as some of you may know, alot of the new Ball Python morphs come from wild caught stuff. eather they are wild caught or babies from wild caught(F1). Im sure all of us would love to hatch out the next new thing in Leopard geckos. I'm no different:main_thumbsup:

As for the animal that pat posted. Alberto Hatched this gecko. It came from a Raptor female X to an E.m.afganicus F1 male creating what we called "afganicus het Raptor"

now with the "afganicus het raptor" there are 2 crosses that this might have poped out of, that is:

"afganicus het Raptor" X "afganicus het Raptor" trying to make a srtonger maybe smaller line of R.A.P.T.O.Rs
or
"afganicus het Raptor" X Funky (redstripe X enigma) http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=12614&highlight=funky and this of course to have strong Enigma's that are poss het raptor.

when Funky was bred to the "afganicus het Raptor", He also proved out to be het Eclipse. becuse the redstripe that was used was from the Patternless stripe line that is know to be het eclipse.:main_thumbsup:

Strangely enough there are people that tries to keep the origional lines clean. No mix no outcross just the real thing. We are outnumbered bye the thousands, but still keeping and breeding the ones caught form the wild. Fasiolatus, afghanicus and so on. They can really trick you being so near to the wild forms, and it can be a problem to find what ( we call it "the red line" here in Denmark ) to do to breed them and also how to get both sexes.
Most of my offsprings are sold to do experiments with morph breeding. Ok I don`t mind as long there is someone, that would keep the lines pure and clean.
Maybe when I find that person, I will stop breeding my "subspecies", but so far such a person isn`t found, so I will keep on holding my "subspecies"

And if they don`t sell..............? HA Newer exspect to make a living out of natural forms. They are not "IT" Just love them for what they are
Best wishes
Søe
