List to your parents logically the pros of roaches over crickets then explain to them that they are a diferent species of roach and cannot fly of climb on glass. Also if you tell them that they look like big rollie pollies it may help

Certain species just look like rollie pollies. Just tell them that that's what you're feeding your geckos.

Or call them "low ground beetles"

Perhaps I shouldn't advocate lying to parents...

NON-CLIMBING-NO-SMELL-DON'T FLY-WILL-NOT-INFEST-TROPICAL-roach.

You need to let them know the cold hard facts. That they are a tropical roach and require a high humidity environment to survive and will die very quickly if they escape(very unlikely though, I have never had an escape) they are one of the most nutritious for them to eat, They will breed like crazy and that means no more trips to the pet store to buy feeders. And no more money spent on feeders or their gas to go get them! Also there is very little to no smell from the bin. They do not take up much room at all and need very little labor to keep the colony going. They can not fly or climb smooth surfaces.(you will want to use a solid color sterilite tub to house them)

See if that helps at all, and let us know how it turns out.

Some night after they had a few drinks,
slip a prepared real estate deed in front of them,
get their signatures putting the property in
your name. Then they will live under your guidelines.
But take care. HJ:main_thumbsup::wall:

just tell them you have 50 bucks laying around and you cant decide weather to buy drugs, booze, condoms, cigarettes or roaches and ask for their moral guidance.

In all honesty just tell them that at 85-100 deg they take up to 6 months to mature at 70 they take almost a year and most will die before reaching breeding size, because they need constant moiture or fresh veggies. I have had a bunch of escapes at my school, and all I have found was dead ones.

Stick with mealies and crickets for another 3 years then?

Wait till you move out and do it then.

Or, just hide em under your bed.

Whatever.

Heh

Put it in terns she will understand

For instance geckos are lizards, then again so are Gila monsters, as well as being venomous. your parents let you have geckos but would not let you have Gila monsters. Its like saying no cats because they are felines like lions are. Or no kingsnakes because cobras are venomous.

Of the 4,000 or so species of roaches maybe 10 are pest or potential pest species. Mealworms and crickets are also insects like roaches. They dont look any nastier.

What you need to do is address the parental fears. It is what there perception of the negative aspects that drive their decisions in this matter. Address their fears and show them how these cockroaches, Blaptica dubia I take it? Are not a pest species, they do not climb smooth surfaces and will not be able to live or breed outside of their enclosure made to their needs. Crickets are far more likely to infest or get established in a home than the feeder roach species.

Hehe Then he will get crickets removed from his gecko's diet, im 33 now and dealt with all kinds of parent and landlord issues with my creatures and projects, I always managed to get what I wanted and reason my way out of trouble. I say a small/med bin? whos to know what is inside?

My parents werent happy when i first got mine. I assured them that they wouldnt be like crickets and escape all the time(let some loose before just to make it more convincing) and that they were alot better for them and if my colonies got big enough i could sell some off and give them the money for putting up with them. With ony 3 geckos you can easily grow out a colony;D Durnign these hard times it seems even parents will alow something like that in there houses(but i wouldnt know im not a parent=w=) Like the others said get a bin for under the bed and slide it on under. They will never know;D Out of sight out of mind right? Honestly ones they relize how easy and harmless they are your parents will think there stupid for denying ya. My Dubias are definatly my fav roachs, red racers second, then discords idk what kind your looking at getting but be sure to shop around. your parents if they are like anything like mine were they can not refuse a good price. :main_thumbsup:
