This is one of our babies we rescued from the SPCA about three years ago. Some say he's a great dane - grey hound mix, some say pit- boxer, others have said something called a blonde hound, and others think he's a catahula..

any thoughts..

He's the brindle one in all of these pics..

he is by all means some sort of hound.. he howls and wines like a blood hound.. he loves to swim and hunt for squirrels, but he's the most gentle loving little guy in the world.. Not the brightest and a bit clumsy..

I would guess he does have boxer also. I can also see why some would say grey hound, In the third pic I can see some grey hound in him. I can also see a little bit of Lab. No mater what he is, he is a cutie!

wow, whatever he is he's one handsome boy!

I see where someone would say greyhound, also the boxer, and wow even the pit.. The smile in the pool pic looks very much pit.

From my 30 yrs experience with dogs and all other animals this is what I see: Boxer/ Pitbull/Lab and If he is really tall( he kinda looks tall in the pool) some Great Dane But I am fairly sure its Boxer/Pit/lab! Good combo. But honestly he good be anything. And sometimes its hard to tell if more than two different breeds are mixed. Cute dogs!!!! I have German Shepherds and a Yorkie. Deb :main_cool3:

I don't see pitt...maybe boxer..... definitely looks like some sort of mastifyness...but I honestly would say great dane looks fairlly likely to me with his facial structure and height/build...I would also say that it does look like he could have some greyhound in him. He definitely doesn't look like a pure catahoula to me...definitely could be part though. Really there's no way for you to tell...he's probably just a good old heinz 57...but I would say he's got some mastiff in him and very likely hound without trying to narrow down breeds...

I agree with you Christina. Definately don't see pit. Just because he's brindle doesn't mean he has pit in him (very bad misconception). I, also, wouldn't go with catahoula, as his hair is too short. I'd go with some sort of boxer mix, possibly grayhound (kinda slim but maybe with the body structure), mastiff (but again his head doesn't fit that either), or hound.

i've owned a few hounds over the years and he's definitely hound. His attitude and vocals are totally hounds. He wines and howls constantly and is a big baby. He reminds me of Odie from garfield. He's most likely a mix. but thanks for the answers.

Just wanted to mention that my basis for mentioning Pit wasn't because of color it was because of the 1st two puppy pics. As it got older I do not see pit so much and as for the hound part. Vocals can tell big time whats in a dog especially when its a breed with a certain sound, Hounds, Beagles, Singing dogs, Basenji ect. I can see Cataloula in body type alittle but also dane. It doesn't matter what he is, it only matters thats hes a cool dog and he is loved. I just picked up the ashes of my dog "Onyx" yesterday, what a beautiful cherry urn shes in. I am very doggy sensitive right now but just love your dogs as much as you can while you can. What more can I say! Hes a beauty and so is the other dog pictured! Good Luck!!!! Deb :main_thumbsup:

Thank you so much and I'm sorry for your loss and I know how it feels to lose one. It's honestly like losing a child. I agree and I really thinks he's Dane, Greyhound, and maybe some boxer. Who really knows and at the same time who cares. He's our baby boy and the most loving spoiled animal on earth. My wife takes better care of him than she does me.

I thought a little pit when he was young also; and not because of the color but because of the heas shape, but those long legs, huge paws, and almost disproportionally large head I thought dane. He also is very clumsy and doesn't really know is size like a dane. He will ber 4 next month.

The other dog is my child (Lexi) that I bought when I was in college after my roommate had just died in my arms weeks before. (long story but he died of a rare virus that only 8 people have ever gotten) She is half Shepard and Half Pit. I saw the parents. She is the smartest dog I've ever known as well as the most stubborn. She needs no spoken commands just hand movements. Can open doors with her mouth, watches television, and knows whether I'm leaving for a business trip or just going out to the store. She is truly my child and she is now 8 years old. She's torn both her ACL's; one twice. Which set me back around 5K total but worth every penny.

With her gaining age I too am looking at her future with a lot of fear and depression. She has been with me through more than any person, possession, or even thought, in my entire life and when she goes a large part of me will go as well.

Someone once told me it's worth the heartache of them passing for the years of love they gave you and you gave them. Although it may be hard to think like that now; you are and were the best thing to ever happen to, "Onyx" and you gave him the best life and love he could ever ask for.

I hope you take some solace in my ramblings and I truly feel your pain and will have in you my thoughts.

Take Care,
Mj

Definitely not dane. I'm guessing the brindle through that thought in there. I would totally believe boxer/pit. Beautiful pooch no matter what the line.

those dogs don't look anything like his dog...the eye shape and placement and everything else is completely different...the 2nd dog *maybe* looks a little like Jackson.....but that dog is for sure NOT a purebred pitt and jackson doesn't have the pitt traits that that dog has.

we don't necessarily think pit because eye placement and snout. His coloring is often mistaken for pit.. but brindle can be a myriad of different k-9's. Were thinking mastiff and hound dog mix.. possibly mastiff and greyhound because his limbs are very skinney and he his torso is shaped very much like and greyhound.. Also his gate is very grey hound.. when running his legs have that snap out fully behind him an then come up between the front two.. he's the fastest dog i've ever seen..

We originally thought greyhound great dane becuae of his large head and paws as compared to his skinny limbs and torso..

The greyhound would explain his hound behavior and the dane would explain his clumsy ways and coloring. Greyhounds are often brindle as well.

Boxer would make sense as well because very paw oriented...

MichaelJ,

my pit pup is also super vocal, always crying, and i find this to be a very common trait among bulldogs/bullterriers. using the paws, again, very common specifically to bully breeds (obviously including boxers :p ).

if your feeling especially nerdy look up Molossian. its the ancestor of all the bully breeds and mastifs. its a pretty cool history and you can see why so many of these dogs look and act alike.

even if your dog is not part pit, it is probably part molosser.

also, its pretty cool to see the evolution of an animal that has been bred for function by humans for thousands of years.
