I just picked up 4 pictus geckos. The guy got them from a reptile expo. They seem like healthy little guys. I was told there around 4-5 months old, so are they able to be sexed yet? I havnt messed with them a whole lot. I want them to settle in and dont want to cause any extra stress.
Right now I have them in a 10 gallon aquarium with a heat lamp and a under tank heater to keep them warm. Paper towel on the bottom and a large log hide. Im gonna get them some small crickets tomorrow
I have allot of experience with leopard geckos, Ive sucessfually hatched and raised a whole seasons worth of eggs and babies :). I have since temporaily retired from leos for the time being, but do plan to get some more to breed later on. haha
But any advice on the little pictus babies I have would be greatly appreciated, as im now to them :)

Pictus are fairly easy. Keep them similar to leopard geckos but with a few minor differences. Higher humidity(cocofiber works well for a substrate) and feed smaller insects, obviously. One thing to remember is that they breed like crazy, the females will lay themselves to death, so you want to remove the male for a few months once a year to give them a break.

I Own one male pictus gecko. I've done lots of research on them, planning on breeding with this sundays expo in missisauga. My male is just reaching maybe 4 inches, and weighs 12Grams. They are supposed to be ready to breed at the minimal age of 8 months, it's a very good idea to wait untill a year for your males, and 12-18months for the female's. Like T-Rex said, the females will be put through so much that if not given a minimal month break every 3 months or so, she is putting her health at risk and could die. Pictus Gecko are VERY easy to breed though and have a high success rate. When ready to brreed, place the male in with the female, not vice versa. There have been situations where the male is placed in with the female and within 30 seconds, mating is taking place.:main_laugh:

We breed them. They are very easy to care for. We did have one breed herself to death. She just would not stop producing eggs. We have found they tend to do better alone the older they get, but at really young ages do fine in groups. At 4 months you should be able to tell the sex. Girls will have no bulge or a small triangular shaped bulge at the base of the tail. Males will have a large bulge almost looking like a square patch at the base of the tail. We like to seperate out the males to live alone once we can tell the sex. The females we leave together a bit longer. They seem to like living in our leo hatchling tubs moreso than the leo adult tubs. We have put them in the adult tubs to make room for lay boxes, but I'm looking into trying something different next year. We have found they tend to start their breeding cycle in the fall about 3 months earlier than our leos. I think they are a fun animal because they have a little more spunk than leos. The different behavior adds some spice to life. They are also exciting because we are starting to see more morphs either through genetic traits or line breeding for coloration. IMO they are years behind the leo market in that respect, so there is a lot of room for discovery for a breeder. One difference as well is they are genetic sex determined, not temp sexed like leos. Ok, I think I've babbled on long enough. I'll have to look at the pics when I get home. Work computer doesn't like to show most pics.
