hey does anyone have a comparison chart for each feeder? like which is supposed to be the best feeder? I remember seeing a chart somewhere on here or another forum about this. Thanks in advance.

hey thanks but one question and the question is. how comes a wax worm only has 11% fat and a superworm has 16%? how could that be? I thought wax worms should only be fed once in a while but it looks like to me if anything a superworm would be worse feeding then a wax worm at least according to the chart.

Shaun it is true Supers seem to be side by side with Waxies but some how they're ok. I still feed them :)

ie. To my understanding almost any and all feeders can carry parasites.

in all the potential feeder issues, pin worms has to be the best. marcia did a huge explanation with me on the phone a few months back and it really opened my eyes. but for all that info about them i would have to get out my parasites and diseases in Reptiles book....once i find more info i will post it. trust me Pin worms aren't near as bad as everyone thinks

Agreed, but by finding Pin worms in the stool... they are doing what they need to do... which is get out of your animals system.

ok after doing some reading, Pin worms have an direct life cycle. This means that the host is infected by the parasite. the parasite then sheds is ova in the animals fecals which if not cleaned out prior to feeding, the feeders then eat the fecal and the animal then becomes re-infected. If this course continues there could be complications with blockage of the GI and in extreme cases a rectal prolapse.

If a Leopard gecko does get infected by pinworms from everything that i have read when caught it's pretty easy to treat with proper husbandry and treatment of fenbedazole orally 3-5 days with retesting fecals.

for further info i suggest reading "Understanding Reptile Parasites" 2nd ED by Author Roger J Klingenberg, DVM

Marcia i do believe sells this book for this is where i got my copy from. It's full of great information and if you have to take your animal to the vet you have at least some sort of reference to what the Vet is talking about when you get home.

Well, yeah I do know every feeder can carry parasites and stuff but the whole pin worm issue makes me wanna steer clear away from crickets. I am breeding mealies now so hopefully I will have some good healthy stock in the future. I still cant understand though why waxies are less fat than a super worm but waxies are worse and should be given as a treat once in a while? it just does not make any sense.

Gecko_Lover_110, Welcome to Geckoforums. your right worms can carry parasites and stuff as well but for me I will stick with worms. the cricket pinworm deal scares me plus I feal like my leos like worms a whole lot better :)

your right well I dont like the local fish stores crickets here anyways so thats another reason I quit getting them to. and I once fed my old oscar a few crickets from this local fish store...and well long story short my oscar got hexamtosis from a bad cricket. so I choose to do away with them plus once I started using crickets from him I have had nothing but trouble alot of them dieng most of them anyhow, so its a good thing you arent dealing with the same guy I am because they are real bad crickets.

and ya your right worms fatten geckos up real nice I love using worms.

Also, one thing that will keep any feeder cleaner is if you clean out whetever it is that you keep then in. Like for example, I order supers 1 time & when there gone i get wax worms. I keep them in the container they come in. Here they use fish food as bedding, but come to me with no food or water.

When I first get them I only throw in small slices of potatoes, carrots, apples, & cat food (cat food has lots of protein) in with them. Then after a week I take out all the worms, clean out the container they came in & when i refill the bedding, I either use oatmeal or the same, but dry, coco fiber I have in my leos moist hide. Then the same gutload. I clean it out every week.

Personally, I dont want my leo, soon to be leos, eating something that has been laying & possible eating its own crap, & they start to stink also if they dont get cleaned. & every other week that I clean out the container, I put the worms in something else & kinda wash them off, idk if it helps anything, but it make me feel better about what my leo is eating, at least I know they are clean.

that is an interesting chart...but I thought that mealies were high in protein...and they are the lowest on the list..... or am I reading it wrong? and it says that they are "fatter" than wax worms..which also seems backwards to me....
