Are your sunglows mean? Mine are!

I just got 2 sunglows a few weeks ago, a male and a female, from different breeders. I have them housed individually. Both of them are rather snappy towards me. None of my other leos ever snap at me, but I swear these sunglows are just downright mean!! :main_angry: I think the female is warming up to me, I was just handling her and she was cool. But now the male just tried to jump up and bite me!

I think it may be the fact that they're in 66 qt sterilite tubs which are 12" tall. They're afraid of things coming from above, since most of their natural predators are either birds or other animals that are much taller than a gecko. My new snow glow and mack ghost are also in 66 qt tubs at the moment, but they're not snappy like the sunglows. So I thought I'd see if anyone else has noticed their sunglows being more aggressive than other leos, or if it's just a coincidence with these two.

BTW, I got a Vision rack that holds (20) 1754 boxes yesterday, so these guys will be moving into those as soon as I put it together. Then I won't be reaching down from above so much. It will be interesting to see if that mellows them out. I've also got some closed back pvc adult racks, so if they don't like the visions I'll try those.

none of my sunglows are mean. Alot of this has to do with the person they came from, some breeders handle and take time with their hatchlings, others dont. im sure the tall enclosure doesnt help either though.

So... I just went to feed my little stripe tremper girl... and um, without me even trying to bother her, I just walked over to the tank... and...

she lunged at me, mouth wide open, tail waving!

anyone even had that happen before???

oh and, I don't have any temper problems with my Sunglows...

Funny, I was getting ready to bump this thread up. The male sunglow that used to try to bite me all the time has totally turned around. Now he is scratching at the tub as soon as I walk in the room. Maybe he's wanting to breed, but he likes to be handled now and is as sweet as can be. The female is still crazy though!

all leos are different and honestly that is a behavior i have seen before. it is not uncommon. while leos in general are docile, that does not mean they all are. sounds like she was upset or being territorial.

My sunglows are really mellow. My male got a little grumpy with me after having to give him sugar soaks after he prolapsed, but he's still super sweet, and one of my favorites.

ours are very calm..

Blizzards and especially Blazzings seem to be most crazy.. but like Robin said they are all different.. we have a female blazing that will sleep in your hands is a dream.. as well as female blizzard (one of our first Leos) is the sweetest of our bunch..

Yeah they've been in 15 qt tubs in the vision rack for a few months now. The female is still pretty snappy, but the male is very sweet now. In fact, he scratches at the front of the tub incessantly when I'm in the room. He may be really wanting to get at a female or something, or he just wants to be held, I don't know. He loves to hang out on my shirt during feeding time. He's one of my favorite geckos now. I do wish he'd eat a little more. The female has a monster appetite, but this guy hasn't been as interested in food lately. The female has almost nailed me in the finger a few times while I was putting superworms in her tub.

I make it a habit to always handle my snappy geckos at feeding time. I no longer have any snappy geckos! :main_laugh:

I still handle them for fun though...:main_thumbsup:

My sunglow Kalea is EXTREMELY docile. She loves being handled (well maybe not "loves" but she tolerates being handled and will fall asleep in the palm of my hand. She's never acted aggressive towards me, she's just such a precious girl.

It's possible that your sunglows are a one in a million type of thing? Just like people, everyone has their own personality.
