This is off topic, but I can't BELIVE they are selling such a strong antibiotic that has so much potential risks if used incorrectly without a prescription. How on earth is that legal? It can cause blindness, other neurological defects and it can be lethal if overdosed even slightly. It's considered the "big guns" as far as antibiotics go, and should only be used in specific situations. Should NOT be used as a general antibiotic that's no big deal. How is this legal??? Grrrr....

I'm no vet, but I've done a couple patching and stitching jobs on nile monitors, so I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to medical treatments... I have a male leo that was accidentally put into the cage of a much larger and stronger male who ripped a nice sized chunk out of his side which then caused a herniation of the intestines after deification the next day. I do not think any vet would tell me anything else but to put him down considering the pea sized hole leading to his body cavity, so I'm not wasting my time with someone who's going to charge me $300 for a lethal injection. Now what I have done is soaked him in purified water with a little bit of fresh ground sea salt, probably like a match heads worth or so. After that I have soaked gauze in water, rolled it up tight, and cut off a piece small enough to plug the hole firmly. About the size of a pencil eraser. I keep the plug really damp, change it every 72 hours, and keep the whole area wrapped with a gauze band coated in triple antibiotic ointment. He seems much better now, he can move and flex without herniating, the tissue has started to heal and I think he'll pull through as long as I can keep him from getting an infection. The baytril came today, the dosage is 2ml to one quart water.

As far as I know Baytril is a prescription only medication that can't be legally sold without a vet signing off...

I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to play with powerful medications at home thoroughly digest this statement before taking the advice that follows it.
Advice? Are you serious? Play with powerful medications? Really? Like I'm some 12yr old kid playing doctor in my bedroom? I'm a 28yr old reptile breeder who is serious about saving the life of his gecko rather then taking it to joe schmo who would rather stick it with a needle and collect all my hard earned money.
I've spent thousands of dollars on BS vets who consult a text book and charge you up the rear. For you to assume I'm PLAYING is ridiculous accusation and an insult at that. :main_thumbsdown:

I am very serious. Baytril can have some nasty side effects and should not be used without veterinary supervision. In fact, if my information on it being prescription only is current it would be illegal to do so. I recently spent $89 on medications and vet advice to save a frog that I paid $10 for, so I really have no sympathy for the "vets are too expensive" line. If you own an animal you have an ethical obligation to provide it with proper care, and using powerful prescription drugs without vet supervision is NOT proper care.

Sounds like you got the hookup.
I somehow paid over $300 so they could cut the finger off a lizard.

And if you have the cash to spend a hundred dollars on advice and meds for a $10 frog, then you must be doing a lot better then most people.

Nope, I'm just a college student scraping by like all the rest, but I take my responsibility toward my animals very seriously.

I bet if you made a list of everything you bought for the last week or two, you could come up with several unnecessary things that could have been sacraficed to have the money. But you said it yourself, you think vets are BS and you have no intention of consulting one. So basically you're looking for free veterinary advice.

Sorry. :main_lipsrsealed:

I'm an even poorer post-grad student, but I've been paying $30 a pop for fecal tests on my $30 Beardie. Factor in one test a month, along with necessary medications, pro-biotics, special vet fees...

We all do it. Those of us who are responsible pet owners, I mean. :wall:

And yes, you are "playing" at taking care of your animal. You are not a vet. As far as I can tell, you are not at all in any sort of medical field. There are some things best left to the professionals.

First - Don't assume you know anything about anyone.
Second - Don't put words in peoples mouths.
Third - So basically this thread didn't start itself.
And for the win,

If you know any "moral" "decent" leopard gecko vets in Ft. Lauderdale, I have a friend who needs some help with crypto, an eye disease, and a cyst type growth. I'll be more then happy to give his business to someone who is more about helping geckos then about obtaining what people can sacrifice.
