Switch the beetles into a new container with new bedding every month or so. If the beetles need moisture, they may eat the larger mealies. They'll probably keep laying till they die, but if you keep adding new beetles, you'll always have a beetle colony.

My old colony I had i never removed the beetles or worms, and it always kept beetles on top and hundreds of worms in the substrate.

Like wise here. I don't separate any longer. All phases in the OLD tub until I start a NEW tub of worms. I Feed larger worms from the OLD tub as long as I can, then feed from the NEW tub........by then beetles are in the NEW tub and eggs and tiny worms in the OLD tub are getting ready to feed again. Back and forth until the OLD tub seems played out. At that time I start a fresh NEW NEW tub with the idea it will be replacing the OLD tub as soon as I feel all the eggs have cycled and been used in worm stage,......then I scrap the grain but retain the carrots and orange peels to add to the NEW NEW tub. This method works good for me with the only disadvantage being you can not sift the worms.......keeps producing though......take care. HJ
