I have had both, and still do. Even have other snakes on top of it. I find snakes cool to watch but thats about it. My corn is always on the go, you cant seem to just "sit" with it. He's either in my hair, in the couch, in my shirt...you get the point. Where the Leo's at least mine, you can have them sit still. Maybe not for long periods of time, but again they aren't a dog or cat. I have received bites from both reptiles. I wouldn't say there is any difference in pain factor. I've had Leo's go at you again and again, where as my snakes haven't. Once they know what they've done they usually retreat. But this is mostly a juvi. stage, and it goes away with time and proper handling. If you want a more relaxed snake get a ball python. I've only been bitten once by mine and it was a sincere mistake on both parties. I was feeding, he was too hungry, and I was using to small of tongs. So my thumb went with the mouse. :)) Anyway, I say Leo's hands down! They seem to make a overal better reptile. I really only see my snakes except when they want to eat. My leo's will come out if they see my by their cage doors. (mostly for food too, but even if I don't feed they stay out)

why does no one talk about garters as pets any more? or any other docile smaller snake besides corns?

We have both in the house and it totally depends on the gecko/snake. We have some corns that are suuper calm and never even shake their tail at us, but then we have one that is such a tempermental girl that I don't handle her much. And then with the leos, we have some that are just suuuch sweethearts, while we have one or two that are skiddish and jumpy like nothing else. So it really depends on the individual animal. I suggest getting to know a few in person and making up your mind :D

I voted cornsnake, I dont have one but my brother did for several years and I have never heard of a corn biting, while my leos have lunged and bitten me quite a few times...

My corn is absolutely insane. He is a rescue, and was never handled after the baby stage because the girl who had him was afraid of him, and he will not tame down. If I even brush him while working in his cage he darts all over the place and rattles his tail like crazy. The couple of times I held him he thrashed around and bit so much that I don't really try anymore, I'm afraid that I will hurt him. He does ok on a hook, well enough that I can transfer him to a tub while I clean his cage, but that's about it.

I very much prefer Boa constrictors over even a well socialized corn snake, their disposition is so much calmer. During the summer I will often take my Hog Island Boa with me when I go out and she is perfectly content to curl around my arm or neck and just hang out, always a good conversation starter. :D Dwarf Boas like Hogs or Cay Caulkers don't get that much bigger than a corn, and are much more rewarding pets in my opinion.

I say corns, because about 4 of my geckos HATE being held and just run away.
Corns are always super nice.
