Best Place To Buy A Leo?

The reasOn i said whats your point, is because i was aware of all this before i bought one. Reason why i didnt buy one gecko from a petsmart 2 minutes from my home, but instead took a 28 minute drive to go find a healthy one. You know some of you are right i wont lie, i know these are mass produced and some may not be amazing quality but ive never had a problem with a single one ive bought.

So again, your just telling me something i already knew. But still had this choice because of budget and because i actually knew ppl working there who told me the little ones were fed twice a day and had not been there for too long amongst other reasons but my thumb is getting tired.

You may have known that, but you didn't start the thread. This should be for everyone's education.

One more thing about pet stores. Never breed or sell your geckos because you don't know what the genetics are.

Everyone will do what they want, but buying geckos from a chain store is not great for the geckos or the reptile community.

You have to use you're own judgement when it comes to buying reptiles from smaller scale stores. Some are great, some are just as bad. Ask questions, staff should be helpful and knowledgeable. Ask what they're feeding, where they get their geckos, what vet they use if problems arise, etc.
I sell geckos at our place. I usually only have 4-5 at a time, housed singularly with humid hides and calcium dishes. No other place around here goes above bare minimum. I know individual quirks and habits because of this, people love that.
I encourage people to look around, I know they'll come back.

If you are looking for one pet quality gecko there is no reason to get one from petsmart. They may not know what they will look like when they grow up but I love my girl and she was only 30 bucks. Get a baby you like the look of and watch it grow. BTW I have never never seen a petsmart have a gecko on sand. All associates I know and have interacted with have been very knowledgeable about impaction issues.

There petsmart I worked at didn't use sand, but there were a thousand other problems. Feel free to pm me about it, but I'm not comfortable talking about it here. Or you could trust me. I quit because of the mistreatment and death.

My point was that you inferred that people do not buy pet store leo's since their tails are sometimes missing. This is true in some cases but I was further elaborating on the MOST COMMON reasons why we try to stay away from pet stores. I meant no disrespect to your post. The information was for the OP.

And to save you the trouble, the point of this post was to explain to you in depth the reasoning behind the content of my first post which I think most people here would agree with. Have a nice day

Yes, really. Think about puppy mills. There are some breeders who mass produce geckos to sell to all the stores. They look like they are less than a week old when they get them in. Shipping is super stressful and many end up sick. If you buy from them, you are just supporting what they do. There are plenty of other places to get geckos from. The only reason that people purchase there is because they're cheap. Just remember that you get what you pay for.

Good breeders breed to improve the morph, have good personalities (being social), and for health.

There is plenty of info about pet store geckos on here.

huh, then my petsmart is unique. MY petsmart has a breeder that i actually met at a expo and they aren't like a puppy mill. :main_thumbsup:

You obviously just want to argue. You're 13, so take some time and try to learn from others. There may be a petsmart or two that are the exception, but you're still supporting the company who as a whole is not great for geckos.

But just to let you know, i pm him the name of a breeder here in Miami.

Why have all your posts been so rude? Again, this info wasn't just for you. I also gave him the name of a top breeder after he contacted me last night for more info. I don't see you lasting long here if your posts are all like this.

You're 13 and get A+'s. That's great, but it doesn't mean that you know it all. You'll learn a lot as you get older. (learn the correct form of there and their before high school) I'm glad I'm not your parent or teacher. If you talked to an adult like that in school, you'd already be in detention.

Some manners and respect go alot further than any self righteous know-it-all attitude. Granted, you are young, but you are interacting with adults in a public manner and I agree completely with Kristi.

Whether you understand it or not, you are contributing to a much larger problem by continuing to purchase reptiles from large chain pet stores. It's great if your local stores do a good job with their animals, but that doesn't change the fact that the majority of people here have seen nothing but malnourished and mistreated reptiles in their local branches of those same stores. By helping one of those stores, you're encouraging the entire chain.

Now, if you do choose to buy from them, then that's your business and it would probably be a good idea to keep that to yourself when it is clear that most people here frown upon it.
