Do male geckos bite female geckos? My male has had a bite at my female, I have now separated them to let her wound heal ect, but will I be able to pair them together again or not? Also how long do wounds take to heal?
All geckos may bite other geckos; it could be territorial, it could be because the female does not want to mate, it could be an aggressive male who beats up his women for no good reason, it could be something else entirely. How bad is the injury, and where is it?
I thought its a flesh wound but it could be a little more than that, iv taken a picture off my poor blizzard gecko and im a little worried as she is about to shed her skin and i might need to help her shed. she is still eating even in the other viv she seems ok and not to botherd but i just need advice on what i should do really.
hears the picture. i hope people dont freak out because i do take good care off her.
any 1 know how long this will take to heal? cheers
I wouldn't call myself very educated in breeding geckos; however, I did see a video on youtube of geckos mating. From what I understand, to help "mount" sometimes males will bite on the female's neck/head.
You definitely should wait for a more educated opinion on the "why" though.
Don't worry too much; it doesn't look very deep. Just let her heal out completely before you put her in with the male again. Also, try to check if she ovulates before putting her with a male (you should see a pink spot on her belly when she's ready; there's a thread about it with photos on here somewhere; just search for it). If a female is not ready, it will fight back when the male tries to mate.
Those things happen, and there's no way you can prevent them, except for keeping each and every gecko separate ;-) The mating ritual consists of the male biting up his way from the female's tail until he grabs her by the neck and does his act. Mostly, you'll only see little bite marks that go away with the next shed, but some males bite deeper and can cause lasting scars. I had a few females with head wounds like these, too. Most of the time, it heals by itself in a couple of weeks, and you don't even need to put neosporin on it. As long as your gecko is in a clean environment, you should be safe from possible infections. If you notice any infections starting, you should go to a vet with her, but I've never had this happen.
