Bold Strip Enigmas

Okay, here is what I want to know. To me the enigma gene, just kind of modifies all other patterns. Changes them, in some way or some form. However some geckos, we breed to look a specific way, like tangerines, and bold strips. When you mix a tang with an enigma, what you get in my opinion is a redder tang. So if we want boldstrips to look a certain way, why breed them to a morph that messes with the pattern, aren’t we just likely to get a jungle pattern enigma, the first year, and then eventually, have the enigma boldstrip, look just like a boldstrip?

I hatched a bold stripe x enigma earlier this year, but she has lost her stripe pattern. One of the things that makes the Enigma so unique IS it's random circle patterning. If the bold stripe gene is recessive as some think it is, then the first generation of Bolds x Enigmas will be het stripes, and next season we will hopefully be seeing more striped patterned Enigmas.

I'll also be trying to work some more defined patterns into the enigmas... I think it can be done, we just need to figure out a little more about these 'enigmas' through selective breeding to better understand how things work with their patterns... ;)

Mel & Kieth (congrete jungle) have some bold/stripe snow bell enigmas I think. They were the first striped enigmas I saw.
Thanks for remembering Marlo! I'm way too tired to find the link but if you search "bold stripe enigma" you'll find it. We just hatched the nicest Bold Stripe Snow Bell Enigma of the season so far but I haven't had time to take a pic yet since we're recovering from jet lag after vacation. I'll try to post pics in a couple days.

Hey do you have those pics, yet? I’d love to see them!

Also I guess what I’m curious about is. If we want a gecko to have a bold strip, aren’t we just going to breed for that bold strip? What will be the difference between a regular boldstrip, and a boldstrip enigma, will it just be the enigma gene?

I think pics were just posted yesterday, but others are on concretejungles. They are just beautiful. And I think Marcia just hatched out a bold stripe enigma.
I'm not sure what you mean if it would be bold stripe or enigma gene? If you check out Marcia's geckos, she has great bold stripes. She just posted a timeline of how the r2 x her bolds came together to create some kick @@@ bold stripes. It's in the recent "bandit" thread.
They are linebred like any other stripe though. You would pick the best bold stripe you have and cross it with another best bold stripe you have. Like this
enigma x bold stripe
enigma bold stripe from that pair x bold stripe
enigma bold stripe x enigma bold stripe
Or enigma male x 2 diff bold stripe females
enigma bold stripe x enigma bold stripe (one from each pair)
next season do enigma bold stripe x bold stripe to outcross
But I'm not sure it's quite recomended yet to cross enigma x enigma to work on refining a lb trait this early with them. I think option #2 is better since the outcross of two diff females is used even though same dad.
Kelli would prob have the best answers as far as enigma x enigma crossings so far.
Same practice as you would if trying to get a bold stripe albino, mack etc.

Actually Nicholas, you are making a VERY good point! One of the things that makes the Enigma morph so unique IS their pattern (or should I say lack of a 'real' pattern?). No two of them look alike, and yet they have a very distinct look that characterizes them. Why make them look like a different morph? Hmmm... good question.

Since I am not brave enough to do and Enigma X Enigma cross yet, it has been fun to see what the crosses look like. So far, one of the two 'striped' Enigmas I've hatched this season has changes so remarkably, there is no evidence of the stripe now. It will be interesting to see if the 'het' stripe theory is valid, and these crosses will confirm that.

I don't think they look like regular bold stripes when you add in the Enigma gene. We've only hatched Mack Snow Bell Enigmas so I don't know what a Bold Stripe Enigma without other genes involved would look like. I love the BSMSBE's because they're striped but have red eyes. So far it doesn't look like they keep as clean of a pattern as a regular Bold Stripe but that may have more to do with the Enigma and Bell combo since they tend to gain darker pigmentation.
