so i know that if people who are closely related have babies together, supposedly there will be messed up genetics.. or something like that. but i know people breed gecko siblings and babies with their parents and things like that pretty often. does it work the same as with people? or how is it different?

It does and doesn’t work the same way.

If you took a male and a female human, had them mate and produce offspring, then had those offspring mate and produce offspring of their own, you might encounter a few problems.

If you had the same thing happen with geckos you would most likely be fine.

Reptiles should be able to be inbreed more than humans due to their simpler genetics, is basically what I’m saying. But if you inbreed offspring to offspring for 50 generations with leopard geckos, you’d be sure to encounter some problems.

:main_laugh: It is, indeed, Aliza!

As far as Leos go, I know some breeders do not inbreed at all, while others do a lot. I, myself, won't inbreed for more than 2 generations without outcrossing. ;)

I'm doing my best to keep the gene pool diverse in my projects, but I've read that you can inbreed for as many as five generations with no ill affect, but eventually you'll run into problems if you never introduce new genes. You're best bet may be to introduce some wild caught genes into the project(s) early on. You can find 2nd or 3rd generation captive bred offspring of wild caught animals if you look for them.
