The other day my heat/red light bulb burnt out. I bought it in November. Is this normal? I replaced it with another brand. I never thought I would need a backup this soon. He had to spend the day with only the UTH.

He's been shooting me a look ever since.

Mine burnt out today too! I wish I still had the receipt for it because I would bring it back. I would think they are supposed to last longer than that! I'm keeping the receipt this time.

Make sure to check the allowed wattage for the light fixture. If its rated for 60 watts and your using 75 watts, it will burn out quicker.
Also, if its a light used strictly for heat purposes, you can use small reccess and halogen bulbs and they are much cheaper. We've been using 50 watt reccess halogens on our Uros for a basking area and they work wonderfully. Theres also the red heat emitters that are a fraction of the cost when the word "reptile" isn't on it. (Just throwing it out there to save a couple bucks)

It's a 75 bulb for a 75 lamp. I was careful about that.

They won't refund bulbs ever. Even if it is the wrong size. You have to be careful when you're buying them.

Nope. I keep the house at 65 and he's in the back bedroom near a window. I checked the warm side floor without the heat bulb and it was only 82. With the new bulb it is 90. I haven't checked it today. He's shedding.

Towards spring he probably won't need it.

I have to say I like the Zoo Med better than the Exo Terra. It covers a bigger area and seems brighter.

Which brand are you using?
They should last much longer then that.
I thought I was being clever by buying a Zi@#a (name edit to protect the stupid!) halogen light hood,
WRONG!! the quality is utter crap!! and I have had some of the bulbs
(very expensive) burn out in only a few months. The timers on these
things dont even work. I was stupid enough to buy 3 of these expensive
hoods, and none of them work!! :main_thumbsdown:

I would have been much better off sticking with the cheap old incandesent
hoods and bulbs.

If you leave the bulb ON 24/7, it should last the same as any other
household incandesent bulb.

I was using the exo terra, but I just changed to the zoo med.

I turn the lamp out at night. It's in my son's room, so I don't want it on while he's in there sleeping. I'm a worrier.

When you get your heat bulbs and put them in try using a rag or gloves when handling them if oil from your hand get on the bulb it will burn out a lot faster then intended. Pretty sure it is true but don't have data or a study done on it. some one told me about it a long time ago, and sence hearing it, tried it and my bulbs seem to last longer.

I went to a pet shop near my house and I bought a red light for Stripes. I asked the guy for a bulb and I also asked him if the bulb could be put into a specific lamp and he said it was ok. When I got home, I put it in and after 10 minutes, it EXPLODED and the pet shop refused to give a refund!
