okay i know that when the leos poop their butt will look like its hanging out, but i came home to find my leo's butt hanging out and now its gotten even worse. he/she will drag it as it walks, and now its gnawing on it. it looks like it has a gooey, white casing or something. also the gecko's behavior is very strange, its pretty much going nuts and franticly running around. i couldn't even hold it still to get a picture when normally i have no problem doing so. i'm very worried.

here is a picture i got of it...

It looks as if your gecko is suffering from a prolapse. I strongly recommend that you take him/her to the vet ASAP as a prolapse can quickly become serious and very dangerous.

There are some home remedies you can try however. If you search the forums for prolapsed hemipene you'll find instructions for several different types of baths you can give him to help aid in the retraction of the prolapse.

Unfortunately it is. I'm actually going to a vet tomorrow if i remember (i'll do my very best) i'll ask what they recommend for a reptile that prolapses. You can call up your vet and talk to them, but you should still bring him in, he'll prob need meds.
You could try putting a little bit of neosporen on it, this will keep it from drying, or Vaseline. Do others disagree, this si waht i did with a hampster i had that prolapsed before it went to the vet

Also, try not to stress it too much. Stress can make prolapses worse.

Best of luck, keep us updated.

Neosporin isn't a bad idea, but i'd go and get some good old "K-Y Jelly" and apply that until you can get to a vet. The idea is to keep that part of the skin nice and moist so it doesn't dry out and necrotize.

i separated it from the other gecko (as my boyfriend and i have these 2 together and they stay at his house) and i brought the sick one home last night. it's acting much more normal today and i'm going out to replenish my stock of neosporin, preparation h, etc. i would take it to a vet in a heartbeat but i have no idea how much that costs and i do not have the money if it is a lot. i will call up and ask and see what i can do. its definitely no worse! it stopped biting the prolapse so there is no more blood and its gotten real easy to handle it and put on the cream. also i was wondering if they can eat with a prolapse? this is the gecko that is real skinny and keeps regurgitating the crickets it eats whole so all it also needs to eat really really bad.

The gecko looks young, so I doubt if it is a hemipenile prolapse. It is probably a cloacal prolapse, and if it gets infected or perforated the gecko will die. Prolapsed cloaca can be caused by heavy parasite loads or constipation/impaction.

Keep it on moist paper towel, and get it to a vet ASAP!!!

Well, most likely the stress of the other gecko caused the prolapse. Sometimes that just happens. K-y jelly is a good idea. Keep it on a moist paper towel.
A trip to the vet will cost you over 50, as most vets have a 50 dollar charge for an appointment.
We have a hampster at the store with a prolapse, she receives baytril in her water. I dont know if that is what he doctors would give you or somethign different.
Try marcia's slurry. I have never made it but others say it works real well. I would usually say soak the gecko in gatorade or pedilyte/pediasure, but with the prolapse i wouldnt risk any infection. They can still go to the bathroom with a prolapse, but it can make it worse, so you should really get her to a vet. Try waxworms or pheonix worms maybe

Keep posting updates!

last update... unfortunately my little gecko died this afternoon...
i called a vet and they said it would cost $87 for the visit then it would most likely need minor surgery which would be $300+... when i got off the phone i saw the gecko upside down and it was obvious it had died.
thank you to everyone for your advice, i had done everything i could to help it, but a vet was out of the question because it was so incredibly young and i had no money to take it to a vet...
it's really not fair that the gecko had to go so young :(

aww, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It's always hard to lose a pet, especially a young one. :( It's a shame how expensive vets can be.
