You can do a search in the Rhac section to see how people set up their Cresteds but we have paper towels on the bottom of our ExoTerra tanks.

My crestie has been in a planted tank with eco earth for the last 2 1/2 years and is thriving (over 50 grams; I got him when he was a month old). The waste composts and fertilizes the plants. I spray daily with water that's been through the Britta filter so as not to get white stuff on the glass. There's a ceramic hide for him on the floor of the tank (exo-terra) and a ceramic water dish in the corner.

Ive had mine on paper towel for a year now, it gets SO messy SO fast i couldnt imagine trying to clean anything else. The paper towel gets dirty and i just throw it out, very easy.

I use terrarium substrate as I have a planted viv so the plants need the soil. If you have live plants in your tank then the acdition of the eco-earth with the plants planted in it would naturally break down the gecko wastes into plant fertilizer. I have had my tank set up over a year now and except for the occcasional glass scrub i have nvr cleaned the viv.

It all depends if you want a naturalistic viv or an (for a lack of a better word) "industrial" look. it is all personal preference. here are a couple pics of what mine looks like. Sorry for the bad picture quality

I just set up a natural viv and use potting soil with the live plants.

If you feed crickets, don't use soil or loose substrate.

If you feed CGD don't worry about the substrate.

I have eco earth in my 2 larger enclosures. I still have my juvenile just on tile and paper towels. I worry about him ingesting the subtrate. The other 3 all eat their crickets out of a large clay dish.
