And it also doesnt help the American Auto companies when they are STILL competeing with the foreign companies that are allowed to give the same rebates AND the CARS allowance. Dont get me wrong, We own 3 dodge trucks, a PT cruiser, My Trans Am and my Brother's Dodge avenger... we support the American car companies.

well my lil ole opinion (that doesn't amount to much lol) I think Eric u are head on about the old 70's and 80' clunkers and I'm not talking bout the classic cars that have been kept up. Nor do I believe Eric is...I am talking bout the ones with rust and smoke clouds and super loud and many other things wrong with them that u might get 5 mpg in. Those are the true clunkers. I own a 2002 Ford Escape. I absolutely love it! seeing that 2001 SUV getting clunked was terrible and that volvo? WTH was wrong with the volvo?? I woulda taken that car in a heartbeat. Maybe they are actually destroying some that are actual "clunkers" and we haven't seen em but majority of what is seen are perfectly nice cars that, well, I would buy second hand lol I guess when it comes right down to it I think t hey should just take a little closer look at those being cashed in for clunkers cause IMO not all are actual "clunkers" Stimulating the economy or not I see so many cars rolling down the highway about falling apart. Thats a clunker...

We just bought a new car Friday.
We did NOT do cash for clunkers because my husband's Durango is worth more than $4,500.
We had to replace my 2002 cavalier that was forming a SERIOUS oil leaking problem and it was something to do with some major seal/gasket/something.
Anyway, it was just time to get a new car.

We were talking to the salesmen at the dealership, and they were telling us all about the GORGEOUS cars they were destroying.

And a lot of people come in thinking that you get the $4,500 + blue book value of the car they're having destroyed.
AND a lot of them do not realize that you have to buy a brand new car.

It's crazy.

AND Ehatcher does have a point about how the foreign car companies have the same rebates and the same offers.
57% of the cash for clunkers cars bought were not even American brand.

There goes at least PART of the plan, Mr. Government.:main_laugh:

Ya its true about the foreign car part- but we're a market economy- can't put restrictions on certain companies... so we can't really do much about that. But American companies usually get about 45% of sales, so it's going at the normal percentage.

The thing to remember as well is that those big SUVs getting 20 mpg are actually getting a lot less sitting in traffic. The bill really is both a help the auto industry as well as a get the newer gas guzzlers off the road. It really does make a difference in areas like the LA basin that hold smog and are populated like crazy.

Forgien car companies do help the american economy as well. Although they are nonunion they do have plants in the US. Some american cars have parts from all over the world in them. The guys working at the Toyota dealership live here too.

Ideally those odler cars are taken off the road when they can't pass smog tests and such at least in some states. Although I guess some places don't really regulate that.

i have to agree. i dont think this is going to work very well. most of the people around here that are doing this cant afford the new car, a few months later the new car is taken because of back payments and the people dont have a car. also most of the "american made" cars chevy, ford, dodge most of the parts are NOT made here, they are made in mexico and brizl. KIA toyota, honda, VW and BMW all have most of their plants HERE in the USA. i want to know when the goverment is going to stop jobs from leaving this country. that will fix the economy, not spending dillions of dollars of tax money. just my 2 cents......

what's sad is even though they're supposed to be blowing up the engines, for lack of better words, some dealerships are putting the cars they get right back on the floor to sell.

But in general, it's pretty stupid what they're doing. Many of the cars are still good enough to re-sell, and they're just being wasted.
