I wanted to do a poll of every ones opinion as to what is the cause of hatchling Eye deformities. specifically no leads
I had been doing great this season with very little if any eye deformities I hatched one out that was a little wide eye. you know were the corners of there eye were the tear duct is the lids don't join.

This morning I found two freshly hatched ones from the same clutch in one container. and one was completely flawless and the clutchmate has no eyelids. which leads me to believe that it has nothing to do with bator temp.
but the vit A deficiency in the female. which is what most people believ ...I think.

i think many things can cause eyelid deformities but the main reasons (that we know about at this point) of lack of vitamin a and temp flux. it is not such an easy question to say yes or no to. it depends on the case could be one or the other or both or not any of them, just depends

I have a feeling it is due to a Vit.A deficiency or abundance, but have no real scientific data to back the theory up. I also think that eye/eyelid deformities are fairly common in leos regardless of the reason, and it could be simply a regular occurence in reptiles in general.

i remember many years back a lot of albino boas being born blind or with poor sight. we are talking fresh born neonates. i remember one breeder, *i think* jeremy stone, taking some of these babies to the vet and trying to find out what was happening. in his case, was that it was not anything hereditary or temp fluctuations while they were gravid but it was a type of infection. weird thing is it only was occurring in the albinos. i can't remember the entire story and details, but thats the main run down. i remember it being on kingsnake YEARS AGO though. so who actually knows whats going on

Yeah I think it's kind of clear both can be the sole cause in some cases. I think the temperture probably messes with neurological development somehow. Remember the eyes develop from neural tissue in vertebrates.

To avoid the vitamin issue, whenever i have a high produceing female she get's a year or so break to build back vit. and fat reserves. To aviod the temperture one I try to aviod extremes for any length of time and incubate in "the middle" . Eggs are pretty temperture tolerant as long as the extremes arn't to great or to long. Certain periods are more crictical then others as well.

Edit: now that I think of it I may be totally wrong. I don't know what eyelid tissue comes from. I was thinking eye problems, not eyelid. It's probablt a cell cleavage or "destruction" issue maybe during development.

If developmental it could just be cells not receiving the proper instruction(s) during cell differentation. Though if that were the case too I'd like to think something else would have differentiated. My only problem is I didn't take human or animal physiology so I'm just grasping at straws here at what little knowledge I do have on the subject (developmental).

my incubator was a fridge retrofited with a helix and 11" flexwatt, the helix is extremely accurate, so this doesn't explain it for me,
there are absolutuely no fluctuations in my incubator.

as far as vitamin deficiencies, I've done everything I was supposed to,
especially with supplementing, and gutloading the mealworms & crickets,

it's unfortunate that it happens, but I have not had anything extreme , like no eyelids....the extent of mine has been mostly small eyelid dents on the eyelid,, and when i see close-ups of many geckos I see that this IS a common problem it would appear, as many many geckos have eyelid notches..

is this partly what we are discussing here (notches)?
or are we talking more serious issues...?

is this so common that noone really even discusses it?

it's depressing- :(
