Well, in the forum rules it says not to give out names, but that's like asking where is the cheapest puppy mill. I think just about everyone here probably has a pet store buy, but I wouldn't recommend it. Let yourself settle into your new pet first and see how much work it is before getting another one. If your still really interested in a few months, go to a reputable breeder or find someone on Craigslist that has to get rid of there reptiles. Seriously though, take your time, they are a big commitment

Rescues too. There might be rescues in the person's area. But I'm not sure I want someone who "pets" their leo to get another one.

Here is something to consider. The cost of the gecko is just a fraction of what that gecko will cost you. If you cant afford a decent quality gecko, how are you going to afford to house, heat and feed the animal?

I think when people really see them they get all excited how cool they look and how "easy" it can be to keep them. They can live 20 years and require time and dedication and in some ways I feel it takes a lot more work than say a dog. We can debate that, but still I like to warn people to take time and really think about what commitments you are making. It's the same thing with breeding. People get all excited that they can breed Leo's but not know fundamentals. Just step back, make sure you are making a good decision for you and your animal/species. About rescues, yes, obviously rescue first. I just couldn't find any locally when I was interested in getting my second and couldn't find a rescue that would ship. Best of luck, but trust these people who are trying to give you good advice. It may come off harsh but it's because we actually care.

Yeah, I think we only have two rescues in PA. It's unfortunate. =/

Philly Reptile Rescue and Forgotten Friends Reptile Rescue. I don't know what they have available for adoption though. You can search Craiglist via searchtempest.com and eBay classifieds too.

Yeah I think forgotten friends sounds familiar to me, and I think they just had turtles and snakes at the time (sorry, not a big snake person and turtles are a little too dirty for me) but thanks for the info. I'll have to check out what they have.

Why do you want "cheap" geckos? You get what you pay for.

I would have to say that the price of the Gecko doesn't necessarily mean it is of better quality. If you just want your normal Leo and can trust your local pet stores I see no issue with purchasing one there. I purchased two very healthy and and social little guys for my kids at one of the big named chains here locally for $20 each. I did however make sure that they knew what they were doing. They have an experienced reptile person there that raises Leo's among other lizards and snakes and the conditions at the store were impeccably clean and the geckos were actually kept in a interactive vivarium type of environment. I am just saying you can budget for your pet and still be able to give it a good life.

When it comes to breeding and superior genetics, they are never cheap.
I dont buy pet store geckos.

You do realize that all the breeding and morphs are being bread to find recessive genes that are not normal to the breed so inevitably you are weakening the genetic code that has evolved over the years to make the species stronger to get a desirable result. With that being said most are for appearance and of course for your giant gene. But these appearance creating genes don't necessarily make them any more or less healthy and stable for captive life. But on the other hand recessive genes that could possibly weaken the animal can be lying in the dark waiting to get out the more you breed for the recessive side of things. Now on a side note there are some cool morphs out there and I am in no way saying I will never own them. To the contrary I will but I don't think you can say that just because the ones at the pet store are normals they are not worth buying as a pet or even to continue a normal breed line. Realistically unless you buy adult moprhs you won't even know if you will want to breed them since characteristics change as they grow. I just don't think that the dollar amount really means you are getting something better all the time.

Nope. I'd love to have some cool morphs, and even if I bought a really beautiful adult morph, I still know that I wouldn't ever breed it. And no matter how beautiful a pet store leo turns out to be, I'd definitely never breed one of those. That whole thing about bad things lying in wait in the dark is more likely to happen in a leo with genes that you have no idea what they are, ie a pet store leo's genes.

That would lead me to believe that you should never breed anything. Gene pools are only traced back so far.

Yes, but many breeders know the genes in a leo back for generations. With a pet store leo, you have no idea what's in there. And if you'll notice, I said it's more likely in pet store leos - not that it's impossible in leos direct from the breeder.

The fact that you think a pretty adult automatically is a viable breeding option leads me to believe that you should never breed anything. :)

I support breeding of good quality animals. Only to better the breed/species/morph. I do have a problem with puppy mills, and I don't support breeders that are just looking to pair a few cheap geckos to try and make money.
