Yes, but many breeders know the genes in a leo back for generations. With a pet store leo, you have no idea what's in there. And if you'll notice, I said it's more likely in pet store leos - not that it's impossible in leos direct from the breeder.

The fact that you think a pretty adult automatically is a viable breeding option leads me to believe that you should never breed anything. :)

I never said anything about me breeding a pretty adult. I said that people think pretty adults mean they have good genes. Just because I am new to the land of Leopard Geckos doesn't mean I am not well educated with genetics. I actually have a degree in Wildlife ecology.

I never said anything about you breeding a pretty adult either. You said a person won't know if they will want to breed an adult because its characteristics change as they age, and my point is that just because it's pretty as an adult, that doesn't mean it should be bred from.
I support breeding of good quality animals. Only to better the breed/species/morph. I do have a problem with puppy mills, and I don't support breeders that are just looking to pair a few cheap geckos to try and make money.
Whenever people talk about breeding leos, I just think of when I was at the Hamburg show on December 1. I overheard the lady who ran the place saying she was turning gecko people away because there were too many of them. I'd much rather see something bred that is rare and not readily available and actually improve the captive species.

And do you realize petstore geckos are the "throw aways" from breeders? Therefore theyre just as "weakened"?
Ppl looking for "cheap" geckos generally are inexperienced and WANT TO BREED NOW. Thats why I said you get what you pay for. Youre much better off buying a $500 trio from a breeder than a few $49.99 mutts from down the street.
Better for the whole community.

No one thinks a good looking adult should be bred from when it has unknown genetics. At least anyone who cares about what they produce.

Unless they're not looking to breed (and dear god, I hope the OP isn't). My leo was from a pet store, but any future leos would probably be from shows (just because I see beautiful morphs for cheaper or the same price as the pet store). Either way, I wouldn't invest several hundred dollars in one unless I was actually looking to breed.

And in that case I would still recommend a breeder and not a petstore. Breeders still have less expensive pet quality geckos. If we dont support our local breeders, we'll be stuck with chains and idiot hobbiests.
All the geckos that I sell at my store come from local breeders that Ive approved myself. I have a petstore and still recommend breeders lol, although I can still give hatch dates, genetic backgrounds and my geckos are all dewormed.

I agree that it's better, but buying from a pet store isn't too big of a deal IMO unless the person intends to breed. Though the best place to get leos from IMO is a rescue or throw aways from other people. I wish I lived in a more reptile-y area so I could take one people decide they don't want.

You are best off just checking your local pet store prices. You live in the area we don't. As for not answering your question welcome to our forum where a few people need to give their opinions on EVERYTHING, related to the post or not.

I'm in Minnesota too, there really aren't too many breeders up here especially if you are looking for a cheap gecko. The best place for a cheap gecko is a big chain store or pet store but you really have to look around and see how they are and get them checked out because a lot of them really don't take good care of the animals. We have one around my area that is AMAZING and one that is just completely AWFUL.

If you can make it up to the cities there are a couple of good stores that specialize in reptiles I can give you the info on them in a private message if you want.. Otherwise there is a show coming in April that you could wait for.

I personally got all my leos from a local mom and pop pet store and one of the better big chain stores.

It's really up to you on how you buy them and where you get them from. Get something you will enjoy looking at everyday and be sure you can give it all the love and care you can.

Seriously, then why are you asking about diy egg incubators on 12/30. Your lack of knowledge and your comments are kinda scaring me. We have seen this before. You obviously aren't listening or taking advice that is in this thread. People are getting upset because just asking this question is sort of a no brainer. Sorry for getting short, but I don't want to help you find "the cheapest" geckos. I live in pa where the puppy mills run a muck around here. I would never go to a puppy mill for a mutt, I would rescue a mutt. If I were to buy a quality breed, I would find a reputable dog breeder that isn't pushing 25 non cared for dogs out there barn door. Just think about it

Excuse me? You dont get to decide what people talk about on threads.
You want to find the cheapest geckos, do your own research! Its not anyone elses job to price search for you but your own. Holy. We're trying to explain to you WHY cheap geckos arent always a great idea. Ovbiously YOU arent listening, or care.

Wow these threads are so much harsher than the chameleon forums...which are a little harder to breed IMO....anyway you did your question in a way I can see why people would not like....but I'm hoping you just meant where can I get good deals. If that's the case I don't see any problem with the question because you're an aspiring breeder on a budget nothing wrong with that. You can find awesome trios for around 300 online. You will be much happier than if you breed pet store gecks...unless you have a reputable exotic pet store near by....some do exist lol anyway do you research and make sure you do everything right instead of letting failure be you're teacher. Also I don't think there is anything wrong with asking a question assuming you are also researching.

Taken in the context of all of the OP's comments and threads - not just this one - it's not harsh. Actually, quite gentle.

Pacific geckos has some trios on kingsnake.com leopard gecko classified for prices that you won't be able best. I have bought several trios from him and they are all high quality.
