Citronella collars?

The big boys need a reality check. None of us can handle them and walks are becoming ridiculous. My mom wanted to get a shock collar to train them but I don't feel that's right.

I'd heard citronella collars work just as well and are, obviously, more humane. Was considering getting two, one for each of the boys but they're like 120$ each. So are these things really worth it? I don't want to be out almost 300$ if they're not even going to work...

In my experiance, they're only a temporary fix for a barking-only problem. I see in your sig that you have g. shepards, and i'm not sure that they'll be so effective on such a large breed...the larger they are it seems the less they really care about the citronella spray...in fact, some of them like it and bark more just to be sprayed again. Its kind of like people that take the pill that makes them sick so that they know not to drink...it usually works temporarily, but always has it's flaws and is never a permanent fix. We use one in the clinic for little dogs that have loud mouths :main_laugh:

What I recommend is a gentle leader...i'll see if I can find a website right now, hang on.

You can even watch an instructional vid if your computer isn't stupid like mine. The way it works is, the loop goes over the nose and around the head, and when the dog pulls, pressure is placed on top of the dogs snout (like in nature, the alpha dog disciplines the other dogs that try to run ahead of him by placing his mouth on top of the other's snouts, and they instinctively fall back in line) instead of the neck. It is not a muzzle, and can be worn all day...the dogs can eat, drink, bark, play, pant and do everything they normally can when fitted properly. I think that if you were going to spend that much money in the first place, this is a better, more permanent-type solution for walking.

Ah...we have a gentle leader. My boys respect me as a higher rank, my dad, and my brother..but not my mom. And she's the one walking them. A year of training has done nothing, she says. I was just trying to help her out before I head back to school.
