I dont think thats something too worry about, it is a very popular material too use, Alot off people also make it so it fits snug into the enclosure, and i think you could get alot more creative with the design in a shorter period off time rather than using clay, is this something you already have or would like too buy for this project. If you need to buy it why not try the foam out? Check some layouts or ideas out on this forum and youtube.

I don't know anything about clay, but what we usually do is take the styrofoam and cover it with grout. It gets pretty heavy, your gecko won't be able to move it.

I made up 2 batches of this yesterday after work. I didn't have much time as my daughter had a hockey game and drum lessons. But I did invert a baking dish and form clay around one side of it to make a humid hide. I sized it so that a low plastic container would fit inside. I made one side completely open and flat so it will rest up against the glass. I have one purchased hide like this now and my gecko loves it. I'm not sure how it will work for the humid hide, but I figured it was worth a try and cheap. I'd like to play around with some foam this weekend. I'll post pics of the clay creation if it works out. I think I went a little thin on the top

I've made 3 hides out of that sculpy clay that stuff is great
I made one for a hedgehog it didn't get used so I gave it to the rat

and made 2 for my Leopard gecko Lemy one small and one big
she likes them. the small one is under the big one
them small one is just big enough for her to slide under it and be partially hide
and the big one is large enough for an adult has large openings on both sides
