I am sure many of you know Bling_my_leo, or Emma, who does a lot of posting on GF. She is without regular internet connection and would like me to post this.

She has a 4 month old Corn Snake named Alley. She just moved into a big new house. Well...yesterday she came home and found that Alley had escaped.

She was wondering about how the best way to try to look for him might be. She was running around the house with pinkies in the dark last night. Any ideas would be helpful, as well as encouraging stories of lost snakes that were found.

Thanks!

Steve

Assuming you know the general area that the corn snake is in, this trick worked for me quite some time ago. Tie a piece of sewing thread to a pinkie mouse, either live or frozen/thawed. Tie the other end of the sewing thread to something sturdy (i.e., a furniture leg). Situate the pinkie so that it is out of plain sight, and leave the area for a few hours. Hopefully when you return, you'll have a young corn snake hanging from the thread. And yes, the snake will digest the thread with no problem. Best of Luck! :main_yes:

Don't give up yet, escaped snakes have a way of showing up weeks later. Look and place your traps near any heat sources, hot water heater, water pipes, etc... If she got outside it could be too late, but there's a good chance she's still around the house. I would carefully turn that room upside down, as it's quite possible she's still in the room she was kept in. Take the bed apart, look in the box springs, anywhere you can think of.

Being only a month old, Alley is probably not able to climb too high off the ground. So I'd look close to the ground first. Then again, you never know. She could be an adept climber. Check your pillowcases, all your clothing, the entire closet... like I said, anywhere you can think of. The sooner you do this, the better your chance of finding her. Just be super careful she doesn't get squished in the process.

I had a ghost cal king that escaped last year. She may have been gone for days before I realized it, so I never found her. But that florida king escaped when I was soaking her in a sterilite tub, and I found her in a bag of clothes on the bed.

It sounds pretty amazing that she escaped. Please upload pics of her setup when you get to a computer. Good luck!

Snakes climb up before they move down when they get out of their enclosures. Within the first few hours of escape, they tend to stay near their tanks but after a few days you want to expand to the whole room. Baiting is useful but if it's not close to feeding day it probably won't work. Make sure you leave out water dishes because dehydration if a fast killer of baby corns.

My corn Nexus has gotten out of his tank two different times, the first time he was found outside two weeks later and the second time we caught him a week later as he was about to go out the door. I've heard stories of them being found months later. Since it's starting to get cooler out, look near warm things like refrigerators and other appliances as a first bet.

Hope you find your baby!

Much like geckos they will also need heat, especially around here this time of year! Set up a hide nearby, with a heat pad underneath like you have in the tank.

Hope you find her soon!

I think a four month old corn snake gets hungry often enough that, if its in the area, it will come out for a meal. At four months, its most likely still taking two meals a week. ;)

I'm only saying that because we tried baiting my 3.5 month old and it didn't work. However, he apparently did find something to eat in the wild/house so that may have been the reason why.

Sorry to hear that, but Im sure you will be able to find a nice replacement.

Plus there is the chance you may find her after you get a new snake, and will have to have 2 :p

WAIT! Before you give up any hope try this method:

Place a small pile of sand under every door.
Then you will know which room he is in at all times.
I just has to be worth it for you to get sand all over the house.

good luck

Try using tape traps. Cut a 12in piece of masking or painters tape. Place the tape sticky side up along the walls on the floor. place these all over, this is the best and safest way to capture young and adult corns. You can also make a funnel trap not as effective but it still works. Cut a third of a two liter bottle. Place the cut part inside the bottle.Tape the cut pieces together. place a dead mouse in the bottle. A hungry snake WILL find it. Also put a dish a water in every room on the floor next to the wall. A corn snake will not last very long with out water. Hope this helps and good luck!
