Crestie tank substrate question...

I put together a 29g terrarium 2 months ago for a pair of cresties I got. Since then everythings been doing well, except the plants seem to be struggling. I'm almost certain it's from what they're growing in, plain Eco-Earth. When I made the tank I added a layer of expanded clay pellets, then a piece of window screening and a few inches of the eco-earth. I want to add some kind of potting soil or fertilizer to give the plants some nutrients and stuff to live off of, but I'm not sure what's safe. I was thinking I would add a layer of Miracle grow underneath the layer of eco-earth so the geckos can't get at it, but I'm still not sure if it's safe or not. Someone else suggested a layer of compost or mixing some in with the eco-earth. What should I do?

I have my planted tanks, including a crestie tank, set up the same way and have had no problems except that nothing much wants to flower. I occasionally use organic liquid fertilizer, but usually let the geckos do the fertilizing. One of my tanks has been going fine for nearly 3 1/2 years. The only things I can think of that could be causing problems is that either the plants don't like the light and/or humidity you have, or the plants just aren't right for the terrarium (I guess that's kind of the same thing).
