hey everybody, just posting this thread as a warning for everybody who has fattys, I've just had a recent outbreak of crypto in my collection probably due to a wild caught that was added to my collection, he was in the same room but not in the same tanks as everyone else, I've just had one of thirteen of my geckos die from this and three other ones maybe a few weeks behind it. just a warning to everyone do not buy a fat tail that is wild caught or suspected to be wild caught. beware of any that are even kept with wildcaught. if anything ther are only a handful of people I am going to buy geckos from now. the people who know about this deadly parasite and have a collection of untainted geckos, as for now my project is down, none of my hatchlings, if i get any ,will be sold. . I have a het for albino pair, het for white sock pair and an abberant, I do not expect to see any of these animals to be around next year, to me this is a trajedy and i'm completley heartbroken. amongst my collection is some of the first gecko's i've ever hatched. it's going to be bad really bad:main_angry::eek::main_no::(:main_thumbsdown::behead::bigcry::bomb::computer::dead::knife::no::sad2::shame::smoking::sweatdrop::wall::wreck:

OMG, I am so very sorry to hear this tragic news! Are you certain it is crypto? How was it diagnosed? Cryptosporidiosis is not airborne, and is usually passed on via oral/fecal contamination.

also, fatty conn i just found out that crypto cannot be passed from mother to egg.

so i would say your best bet is to try and get some eggs from the geckos you love, and then make sure your hatchlings do not get infected. you know, at least to try to save your lines.

good luck.

well i've been talking to Jeff galewood sr. of jmg reptiles and he knows probably the most about crypto, and the conditions that i have, he seems to think that it's 99.9 percent crypto, the wild caught that i had did not come into contact with the others but after he died the tank and water dish were reused without bieng properly sanitized, by that i mean doused with alchohol and thoughroughly dried. the first female that has died quit eating about a month ago,the past two weeks i've been treating all of them with panacur, to rule out worms, no testing has been officially done but i've dissected the gecko myself and found that the liver was very large and mottled, between all of the detailed information and description of the corpse, jeff seems to be very sure of it, and aat this point, it seems by the way i took care of them, day to day that i've quite possibly spread the infection to all of my geckos. only one of them is laying eggs right now. all of my other females that are breeding are not showing any signs of gravidity. but it is still november so maybe they will start producing some soon

This would explain how it was passed to other geckos. You would have needed to disinfect the tank and everything in it with straight household ammonia to kill the cryptosporidium oocysts. Here is an article that was published on crypto and disinfection:

I hope you can erradicate this deadly disease in your colony... and again, I am so very sorry for you.

Ok maybe im missing something here, but i think your jumping to conclusions. Im not saying jeff is not knowledgable enough to know the signs of crypto, but there is no way of knowing for sure without testing. I have works for a exotics vet for years, and there are multiple things in reptiles that have the same symptoms. Not to mention panacur is NOT the end all to parasite problems. There are many different parasites that panacur will not cover, and without a fecal being done you are just guessing and shotgunning meds(WHICH WILL kill animals too).
Im sorry the certified Vet Tech in me strongly disagrees here and this is seen too often. A simple $15 fecal could save you a ton of stress and heartache. I would not jump to Crypto, without asking your vet to do a simple Acid fast stain on a fecal sample. Im sorry if you maybe offended by my post but please do you and your collection a favor and go to a vet and get professional testing instead of over the phone/email diagnosis which could be way off.

Pat is right. Just about every problem a gecko could have starts out with the animal going off food. Without the proper diagnosis, you may be allowing your geckos to die needlessly if they can be treated!

Coccidia is not uncommon for wild-caught geckos, and is treatable if caught in time. It is highly contagious, and fastidious disinfection and husbandry is necessary to erradicate it, along with medication.

hey snared I appreciate the concern, and i'm not offended but there are some things I did not want to discuss(facts), on the forum, so without you knowing all of them I understand your view, please just don't make any assumptions about my methods, or myself without understanding the complete picture, I assure you I'm doing the best I can for the situation. Thanks to everyone I'll keep you all updated, till then be safe. I wish I knew about this sooner

also snared instead of laughing at some body telling them they are getting ripped off why don't you inform them where a 15 dollar fecal can be done, maybe we want to know, I've been to 3 vets in my area and usually they are at least twice the amount

Pat (Snared99) is correct on his figures, but I too get raped by vets in my area.... $60 office visit + fecal costs... per animal is the quotes I recieve.

I assure you, Pat was not trying to be mean and would help you in any way he could.

I guess i dont quite understand? You come to a forum to get help but dont post the facts?? Please let us know the facts so we can help, without them this is what we have to work with here.
All im saying is there are many things that can appear to be crypto, but without a acid fast test you are guessing.
Also i would be more then happy to assist anyone as to where to find a vet, but im in PA and i can only help those near me. I was not making fun of/ or laughing at anyone, just stating the 'facts' here.
So please if there are facts on your geckos that can assist us in helping you, im sure we are all ears. But please dont get defensive when you purposely leaving out "facts" and we are giving our knowledge to help you.
