Cutting feeder costs

I was wondering how everyone feeds there collection without braking the bank. The cost of crickets have gone up where I get them to $35 a 1000.Which is a lot when I got through 1000 plus a week. The only thing I can see doing is switching back to meal worms for adults. I will keep feeding hatchling crickets because I like to. Also I might start looking into getting a colony of roaches. Anyone have suggestions?

There are quite a few people that have started their own colonies of different feeders to try to keep their costs down.

That is expensive for 1000 crickets, I would be looking for other vendors. We are just across the border from you so I don't know the going rate in Canada, but our cost is halft of what you are currently paying.

If only I could get them that cheep, i would have tons more reptiles! there 30cents each at the petshop an 45 mins away where i get mine. and $5 for about 60 mealies. and if i can get them across the province i can get 500 crickets for $35 when the guy selling them answers his emails and cell phone!

I am tryin to get a roach colony going now, but that takes up to 4 months apparently to get a good stable one going. So im still pissed at having to spend about $15 a week on feeders. Once the roaches are going things should start lookin up. ... So hopefully roaches are the way to go.

We breed our own mealworms and roaches to keep costs down. I do still buy silkworms and waxworms, but having the main staples taken care of saves me a ton of money every month. I just buy some every once in awhile to add to the breeding colony.

Roaches and mealworms are the easiest to breed. It might take awhile to have a stable colony to feed off from but it'll pay off in the end.
