Vivarium is latin for place of life and aquariums and terrariums are just kinds of vivariums. Terrariums are to simulate dry areas, so what we make for our leos would be terrariums, the dry land form of a vivarium.

I'm not entirely sure about this. I did check definitions on the web and there are places which define both terrarium and vivarium as places to keep small animals, but I have a feeling that technically, a terrarium is an enclosure for plants (terra=earth) and a vivarium is more a focus on a place to keep small animals (viv=life). I imagine they are frequently used interchangeably.

Vivarium (Vive = life) is a term used to discribe that a little piece of habitat is build in a closed environment (for instance a glass container). This is divided in (roughly) three different biotopes: 1. aquarium (aqua = water) 2. terrarium (terra = earth) and 3. paludarium (both land and water). The environment also can be called after the life form that's housed in it; only plants --> herbarium, ants --. formicarium, etc. (wikkipedia....)
