So I bought a 20L off craigslist foe Sophie...This is all the add said

*20 gal tank set up for a reptile. sand, rocks, vines, plants, wood, rock bowl, lights, top, everything including full un opend bag of greens and tons of live crickets. my daughters bearded dragon did not make it in the move:) asking 65.00 or 45 if picked up by friday*

But I figured for $45 you really cant go wrong.

OK So I go pick it up and put it in my car...the smell was killing me!
She said that she had a Beardie in it and that it died when her daughter forgot to turn on the heat lamp...had she been using an UTH I dont think that would have been a problem...right?

Well after getting the tank home and unloaded I took out all the decorations which BTW were nasty with FECES. and the sand that was in the tank had cat hair all through it and smelled of cat piss and cigaretts.
I cleaned everything with water and vinegar. the rocks however were holding the cigarette smell so I soaked them in bleach and water for 15 minutes and then rinsed and ran through the dishwaher without soap...that did it.

but I think there had to be more than no heat to make the beardie die.
no heat
ciggaretts
she wasnt gut loading her crickets...all that was with them was bread
ohhh and the cat piss...

she also admitted that she has alot of animals and breeds them all...:main_rolleyes:

Wow that is disgusting.... I almost got nervous when you said there was a terrible smell. I thought you were gonna say the beardie was still in there. But that is horrible. People are clueless.

Nasty, its amazing how dumb some people are. I think the old saying, a sandwhich short of a picnic would be giving them to much credit lol

i would clean that with some ammonia to make sure you kill all the bacteria. of course rinse all of the vinegar and bleach out VERY well and let it dry and then rinse it out again before using the ammonia

That's what I thought too!

Ewww...sound soooo gross!

I admit, my hubby and I are smokers. We DO NOT smoke in the house, in our cars, or around our son though. I don't get why people smoke in their homes. I'm a smoker and I think that's gross lol

I bet the beardie died of lung cancer from second hand smoke

Sorry that you had a crappy time with it

My hubby smokes and I do not...But he smokes outside as well. He even thinks its gross and I WILL NOT have that around MY children because They are not the ones that chose to smoke.

I worry about that woman breeding too as well.

Her exact words were..."I'm such and animal person. I have alot of animals and breed everything I get. I have sugar gliders, cats, dogs and lots of other things"
Shes not breeding for quality and to me sounds to be a perfect example of a backyard breeder :(

Exactly. We smoke outside on our porch. We also take measures to get the smoke off (washing hands, brushing teeth, changing clothes, etc) before we interact with our son

Anyway...I feel bad for those animals

Sounds like a backyard breeder too. If you have her info...I'd report her...

That's awful, and I agree with Robin. I'd make sure that tank is completely disinfected before I put anything else in it.

Sounds more like a "pet hoarder" than a breeder.

Sounds foul, it sucks that you had to deal with all that junk... And I too find it a little disturbing that you said she breeds animals...
