tonight when I went to feed my leo some crickets, he went to the dish immediately, grabbed one of the crickets out and then dropped it. Then he started rubbing his mouth from side to side on the floor of the tank and then just went back into his hide. I've never seen him do this before. Is this something they do sometimes? or is something wrong with him. Thanks in advance.

One of mine was irritated by the hair-like things on their disgusting little back legs...woudn't touch another one after that...if you can, you should try removing the rear legs before feeding and see if that works...

I've also noticed that if crickets are normally gut loaded and a particular cricket hasn't eaten enough of it, the cricket tastes 'bad' and my geckos won't eat them. Silly creatures. ;-)

Well I actually do remove the back legs so they can't get out of the feeding dish. And they are gutloaded so maybe that one cricket just didn't taste right. It looked like he just freaked out as soon as he grabbed the cricket; he dropped it and started moving his head and upper body really forcefully from side to side like he was rubbing his mouth on the tile.

Just a quick update. I removed the crickets and offered mealworms and he gobbled down 7 of them very quickly. I think that's it for me with crickets. Only mealies from now on. They don't smell as bad and in my opinion they're much easier to deal with.

Tiamat, the little miss prissy pants that she is, gets irritated by their antennae. lol Sometimes it's annoys her enough to strike and eat, but most of the time she doesn't seem to like crickets that much at all.

Haha, I have some that absolutely hate the taste of crickets...you see, sometimes I want them to have more variety and so throw in a cricket while they're enjoying their mealworms, and a few of mine will actually spit it out very quick!! LOL (and yes, they will also wipe their little mouths on the floor carpet MANY times).

Stripes HATES crickets. I gave him one without back legs and he went up to investigate. When he got close, the cricket started to touch him with it's feeler. Stripes got so annoyed. He kept on going closer to the cricket then backing away as it touched him. Since he was hungry, he didn't give up. This went on for about 2 minutes then I think Stripes got fed up and ate the cricket. :D He never touched crickets after that.

My geckos are too fat and lazy for crickets.. :p

Supers, on the other hand, stay in the bowl so they take their grand ol' time about it.

One of my females doesn't even bite them, she just gingerly picks them up and eats it like she's fine dining! Haha. I think she's savoring it. Soon she'll be pulling out a fork and knife..

Crickets that are Younger, smaller, Gut loaded on a good grain with additives, along with carrot/orange slice moisture
seems to make a more interest to geckos....(Beef to Possum)
take care. HJ

LOL thanks everyone for the replies. I just wanted to be sure nothing was wrong with him. He was eating the gutloaded crickets fine. He wouldn't eat many of them though only 2 or 3 usually. I guess that one just didn't taste good to him. he always eats plenty of mealworms though, so from now on I think i'm done with the crickets. Thanks again everyone.
