Yes he is hardly eating his mealies. I don't know of he doesn't like them anymore or if I should try feeding him supers. You know switch it up a bit. Any advice? All in all he is drinking his water regularly and licking his calcium once in awhile. Thanks for the help/input! God Bless - Moefv

What about crickets? Supers are nice on occasion (and wouldn't hurt here since it wouldn't kill him to gain some weight), but if you're looking to switch from mealies, crickets might be a better option.

Also, does he have access to belly heat? I've read (though I can't personally verify this) that if they eat a lot of mealies and don't have heat to their bellies, they'll have trouble digesting all the chitin.

He does have belly heat. His hot side is always between 88-92 degrees. He is pooping regularly and healthy and I checked today abd he has eaten some mealies. I will be going today hopefully to buy him supers. I don't like crickets just because they smell a lot. Thanks for the input! God Bless - Moefv

Supers are fine as a staple for an adult leo (I like medium supers). I know of a few breeders that use supers for all there adults. As long as you properly gutload them like any other feeder.

I was informed by a lot of people that they're too high in fat. Is that not true?

They don't really smell if you keep them in something that's kept clean. I have a tank of them in my bathroom, and I never notice any smell.

I must say i kinda agree that crickets smell :p and locusts but i think thats mainly to do with what you feed them and also cleaning the feeders out, its hard lol
I understand what you mean about switching up the food, mine go through periods of deciding the dont like their current food. fussy gits. but they will eat when they get hungry enough :)

from what I read, Supers are in the middle as far as fat compared to other feeders. (not the highest and not the lowest)
They have very close to the same protien content as crickets and mealworms.
Crickets are good feeders with the exception of phosphorous content... they have the highest out of the popular feeders and supers have the lowest.

Crickets smell really bad no matter what you do IMO. Even in a brand new tub..... Nasty.
I think the best feeders for leos are mealies, dubias, or supers (in that order) JMO and not fact. Supers, dubias should be of course the proper size for the animal.

we have two containers of them. one of big ones and one of small ones and i gag every time i open the cages even if they're JUST cleaned. for a while i refused to feed with the large crickets because they're so stinky. :main_lipsrsealed:

You're right. The fat amount is not far from waxworms. They are not good as staple and they don't gutload well either.

I use supers as a staple and have had zero problems. Many other people do as well. Supers arent that far off from mealworms if you want to get technical.

Your statement on supers not being a good staple is your opinion and not fact.
The fat content is not far from mealies either. lol!
You can gut load supers just as well as most other feeders and they are fine for a staple as long as you use the proper size for the particular leo.

It's not an opinion when the proof is right in front of you. All you have to do is compare the values of all insects.

Well out of curiosity, I did a little (not extensive) research.

Fat content of mealworms: 12.72% Waxworms: 22.19% Superworms: 17.89%

http://chamownersweb.net/insects/nutritional_values.htm

Fat content of mealworms: 13.64% Waxworms: 20.12% Superworms: 15.07%

http://www.angelfire.com/tx/facehugger/insect.html

Superworms are comprised of 59% moisture, 19% protein, 15% fat, 6% carbohydrate, and 1% ash.

Amount per serving:
Mositure: 60%
Fiber: 6.8%
Protein: 17.4%
Fat: 17.9%

Fat content of mealworms: 12.72% waxworms: 22.19% supers: 17.89%

There isn't a lot on their nutritional value out there, especially 'cause a lot of the sites are calling mealworms superworms. But it looks like they're at least about somewhere in the middle.
