Does no one rent out males?

I was just curious to know if it's common (or uncommon) to rent out males (call it stud services, if you will). I know that this is the norm when breeding horses and often with dogs, but I haven't heard about anyone in the gecko community doing anything like this.

How do you feel about being able to rent (or rent out) a male for a few days and be able to produce the offspring you want without having to purchase a potentially very expensive male? Lets pretend that this is with people who breed in the same city or something, so it's easier.

Since it is recommended to quarantine all animals for a minimum of 30 days, I would only do a breeding loan by written contract with someone who's gecko 'facility' I have personally inspected and knew how their geckos were kept. I would not let any of my geckos come in contact with another gecko without quarantine. Most people I know who have done breeding loans did not have the best experience with doing that.

Only with good friends... Wouldn't want someone breeding them to an untold number of females and then be returned looking like crap... :main_no: Not a personal experience of mine, but it happens...

Around.
:) Most of the time with dogs, and horses, the semen is collected there is no contact between 2 organisms...

I would agree with above.. although I don't breed but if I did and was asked.. thats what I would think.

Dog breeders do this. It's called "studding" or "stud". Sounds like a great idea, but then there's the risk of illness or someone mistreating your male leo. I would totally do it if I lived near a responsible leo breeder. Whether it be loaning out a male or borrowing one of theirs. It's also a good idea to diversify the gene pool of your breeding leos IMO.

Hmmm good points, I forget the quarantine thing.

I guess I would have to agree then. I still admit that I would do it if I knew the people and could go and meet them. Between friends, lets say.

If my pretty red striped gargoyle gecko turns out to be a male, I'm strongly considering loaning him to a local-ish breeder.
But I've seen pics of his set up, and I would be making a visit there. I will NOT mail geckos for loans.

I would be aware of this person's breeding practices, and I would visit and know exactly who he'd be breeding my gecko to.

And I'd get pick of the clutch.

No, definately not mailing animals. You don't know if you'll ever get him back! But I think that if it's between people who know each other and who live close by, it's probably even better for both parties. Instead of having to go out and purchase a $300 male, lets say, you borrow one and both parties end up with pretty hatchlings.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who breeds near me anymore, so this is purely curiosity.

I would only do breeding loans with people I knew very well. That wouldn't be very many breeders at all. There are a handful that I would trust though.

I don't know if this may sound selfish or wrong but starting a stud service may not be the best interest for the industry. Being that if everybody was to pay a certain price to breed a loan to their females then the price of certain geckos may go down because of how many may and can be produced. To a friend or to is cool but a service for all just destroys the foundation of rarity and price. Just my opinion!

I don't agree with a 'stud service'. However, there are some breeders who will work on a certain project together using both their animals. I would never just rent out a male for no specific reason.

Hahaha rent-a-gecko.

I do agree that a service as such is probably not a good idea. But, again, I think that between two or three friends who want to have a project together it seems like a good idea. Not everyone will agree with me, but whatever, it's not like I would do it anyway. I don't have anything anyone would probably be interested in "renting" from me and I'm fine with the boys I have lol.
