.....I was thinking; (please don't take this as critiscism) all you big breeders out there with tons of geckos, what would you do if your house or wherever you keep the geckos catches on fire or something? I have just been wondering what you guys would do; would you snatch a couple favorites and then try to save as many geckos as possible? This question has been nagging at me for a while.......Again, please, I am not critisizing you guys, I am just wondering what you would do with all those geckos.......

This is actually a good question. There was a 4000 acre fire close to me not long ago. I would start by grabing a few choice favorites and then getting all I could. I would also grab up my computer tower and leopard gecko log book.

4,000 acres? Yikes! I would hate to have a fire close to me. When I was in 2nd grade, the 1st-2nd grade girl's bathroom caught on fire from a bulb blowing out. One of those long florescent ones. The computer tower? What for? If you have the gecko log book, doesn't that have everything?

Must be a pretty nice tower with lots of memory and space :D

I worry about fires and wonder what we would do all of the time.. We have five cats that we would have to grab, then try to get all of the geckos and beardies.. it's definitely not something that's very nice to think about!

With all of my animals-I can't even go there
:(
Maybe that is unrealistic but with most house fires there is barely enough time to get the people out and cats and dogs if you are lucky

Going back into a blazing house for our beloved reptiles sadly would be very dangerous

As I said-I just don't even want to think about the possibility and I pray that it never happens

You'd better hope all of your racks are on wheels... otherwise I'd imagine that would get very tricky very fast. As for tanks... that would be tough. I have no idea how I would handle that, and I certainly hope that I never have to find out.

I wonder if overhead water sprinklers would do the job... hmm. If that would be enough to stop the fire, then I would much rather have a bunch of soggy geckos than a bunch of toasted ones.

I'm sorry, but I have to say that made me laugh, just the way you put it :D.

Yes, I pray every night that nothing happens to any of my family, friends, or myself and my beloved reptiles. It would be disasterous for me if I lost one or more of my geckos. I have lost 4 baby geckos that I bought from various petstores, and I think, other than being from a petstore, is they died cuz I didn't have the right stuff in the tank for them. I was a stupid retard back then comparded to what I know now, all thanks to you guys and the guy my geckos came from :p.

I cannot even imagine what I would do, but it is something I have thought about! Since I live in California, and it has been on fire for the past few months, the most important thing is to GET OUT safely. I have all the lids for my gecko's tubs on hand, and if there was time I would certainly do everything I could to save my animals. Family photos and documents would actually come first... things that could not be replaced.

The truth is, I could see myself dying in a fire trying to save my animals...

I am not a "big Breeder" so I would probably just grab them all since I don't have too many. If I for some reason can't I would grab all my breeders and ditch the babies and shove them were ever they could fit. Probably rip out the Heat cable on my rack just so I could have something to heat them with and grab the shipping heat packs.

This is and has been my biggest fear since the first day I brought a cold blooded animal into my house. It has got alot realler as I grow older and see friends and nieghbors, houses I have been in, and slept in burn to the ground. And they dont even have the eletric/ heat hazards I do. It is a risk you take. Also the SOLE reason I am trying to get a "herp house" completey seperate from my home.

You need to get out. Don't take anything with you. Just get out of the house. I have seen too many people go back for things or try and bring things with them and they never made it out. Get out and stay out call 911 and make sure you and your family is safe.

I don’t think I can consider myself a big breeder; I only have about 85 leopard geckos. And honestly if there was a fire, I wouldn’t save any of them. I would grab my dogs, and get out. If possible I would grab my favorite bird. But really I would let them die, to put it simply, my gecko’s lives, just aren’t worth mine.

The sad thing is with reptiles is that we lock them in cages unlike our dogs or cats, so they really don't even have a chance to escape like a dog or cat would. Even worse if you have glass tanks, I know someone on another forum that this happened to. Her reptile room caught fire all the glass tanks pretty much exploded from the heat, everything was lost. Another thing, unlike dogs and cats which just live in our house with us, the reptiles have pretty expensive setups, so even if you can save them, what do you do after? You may be left with nothing, no tanks, no heat sources, anything. It's just an all around bad situation that I hope to never experience. Since I sleep in the room with most of my animals, I would try to grab what I could, but the most important thing is mine and my family's safety. I would get all my family members and my dog before I would get my reptiles unforunately. I think I am at an advantage though because I am in the basement so if the fire started say upstairs, there could be a chance that the reptiles could be saved.

I would throw my females in one large tub together, grab as many males as I could, throw them into small tubs individually, and throw my babies all together and sort everything out later!!!

man... that would sure be a scary situation...

Well I am in no way a big breeder. A breeder period. I havent even hatched any babies yet. Haha. But being in southern cali I've had to deal with the fires on more than one occasion.

I was woke up and told to go get my horse they were evacuating (had no clue we were even on fire yet). I blew it off and took my time. In cali the smallest of a flame and they will shut down miles of road. But when you clear a hill and see orange FLAMES in every direction and where your horse should be. Its an adrenalin rush you dont want to get. I stayed way longer than I should have getting my two horses out. Embers were falling while I was loading them. On top of that, after my horses were gone, I stopped and helped move 30+ horses from another ranch. Along with other people bringing animals down. We found out later the fire was stopped literally 50 yards from the barn. But that wasnt involving my house. When the fires were three blocks from my moms this is the order it went. Pics I could grab and two cats. I left the third because she was flipping out. Seriously tossing cats and photos at the same time into my truck and flying out of there. I actually hesitated with even with the two cats I got. I could see the flames out the back door. I said sorry and took off.

After that experience Im a firm believer in doing all thats in your power to keep you...fire resistant. Cant think of any other way to put it. Doing everything in your power to make you as safe as possible. After that family comes first. If you have warning and time save what you can. I love my animals. But my life and my families life is more important.

Just my two cents

I wouldn't even care if Male X males were together. lost tails is way better than a fiery death. i would probably just grab as many as I could or just open the garage door since that's were they are and push everything out to the front :main_rolleyes: I guess that's an advantage.

Wellit wouldnt be too hard for me because I only have on gecko to grab. Although I am pretty sure I would have to hard of a time to just let it burn. But at the same time there is something else I would much rather grab then my gecko which is my book.... Well actuallt my laptop then considering thats where it is. I really hope though that I never have to do something like that.
