If you see a fire starting somewhere in your house- extinguish it. If it is already too big to be extinguished just get out as quick as you can. Don`t grab anything, alarm others and just get out. As smoke gas is malicious and being the main reason (yes it is not the fire. It`s the smoke!) for people and animals to die, it might be your last chance.

Old people in europe often do have a little bag with the most important things in it. That`s a good thing.
Keep your electricity (especially if you have reptiles!) checked by an experienced electrician every few years. This is very important. If I see some racks, I get nervous from time to time,...
Having some extra smoke detectors and a big extinguisher is also perfect, supporting your local fire fighters (at least with a cake :p ) might be helpfull too.

These are my best guesses I can give, speaking from a ten year experience as an EMT.

Keep save!

I am not a breeder, I only have 9 geckos at the moment, so I guess it won't be too time consuming for me to evacuate with my geckos. I live in an apartment which is only 2 storeys from the refuge floor, I bought enough shipping cups and have a bag ready; I talked with my husband about this before, in case there is a fire, I'll go get all the boys and he'll get the girls, then we escape. Money and stuff can be burned, but not my geckos.

p.s. If fire is too serious, we'll soak a towel and wrap ourselves first, then go get the geckos ;)

I have over 20 geckos, two tortoises, a crested, sugar gliders, and two dogs. One dog is outside, so that's out the way. If I had the time, like on the 4th of July, my neighbors caught my bush on fire and I happened to see it...it kinda spread fast. I would had some time, so I helped put that out, since it could be put out.

My baby tortoises and leopard geckos can fit in a purse together. Males won't fight each other. They would be too focused on what's going on. If they do...I tried...But I have 18 females to cover them. Then I'll but my little crested cage in my sugar glider's cage and get going. It will be really easy since my geckos are pretty easy to pick up and won't run.

If I don't have no time at all, I would be crying for my babies. It would hurt someone who loves their animals. It feels like not being able to save a family member.

It's funny that'd you'd bring this up. I've been a volunteer firefighter for almost 4 years now and I actually just got back from a house fire. It's the reason I'm up so early on a Saturday.

In case of a fire I'd probably allow myself more time than I should to grab things because I'd trust myself and my training. I'd try for the geckos but I'm not sure they'd be a top priority.

Having seen people trapped and die in fires and knowing the instability of a burning building as a fireman, I have to say to everyone that if your house or the building you are in is on fire you need to make it a priority to get out first and foremost. It may not look bad but fire structurally compromises structures, and what looks like a few managable flames can make a roof or a floor collapse easily without any warning or you knowing it. Don't mean to preach, I just want to emphasize to everyone the danger inherent to a burning structure and how saving anything but yourself may, at times, be unreasonable.

Also, as someone else above me said, support your local firefighters! Especially if they're volunteers!

I my herp room there are 2 big trash cans. Everything will be put in the cans and dragged out. Quick, simple, and safe. Its only me and my reptiles. Eveything else can burn... LOL

Well, I'm no breeder but I would get my beloved Desert King, and my Leo if I could. Because soon that'll be all the reptiles I have, I'm selling my two Milks.
That is a good question though for people who have massive collections. :)

I'm just thankful that we live in a place where we don't have to deal with natural disaster type fires like some of you. All of the wiring in our old house has been replaced so the most likely cause of fire here would have to be from a lightning strike or something. We have several fire extinguishers throughout the house as well as smoke detectors so I would hope that we could get any fire extinguished before the fire dept. even arrived (they're 2 miles away). Our biggest threat here is hurricanes. Luckily we get advance notice about that and can fit all of our racks and other pets in our cars if we had to evacuate.

I think the bottom line is smoke and fire are dangerous and you have to get your family out first. Having working smoke detectors all over the house is really important as well as having an escape route.

I have had the idea of seeing if there was a way to build a fire prof (or highly resistant) reptile house. I was thinking maybe thick concrete structure with fire doors. excellent electrical work good ventilation system and no brush or other flammable materials around the perimeter of the reptile house. no need to choice or evac hundreds of herps.
maybe it might not work or maybe it may

o ya and an emergency sprinkler system around the entire thing.:main_thumbsup: :main_robin:

I would get my kids out, or die trying, but that's it! When we were young, we lived on the coast in Mississippi. During a hurricane, I remember packing and waiting to evacuate, as the storm raged outside. Years later, I found out that we had been ordered to evacuate, but my dad didn't want to leave the dogs, so we waited it out. No matter what the disaster, people first!

Also I think someone mentioned sprinklers and the fact is they do work very very well in limiting or even completely extinguishing a fire. They can and do make all the difference when a fire breaks out.

i would be devastated if fire ever came threw my home... the very thought of it scares the crap out of me anytime i think about it... the fact that ive worked very hard threw life to get where i am wich is still not that good, and having it all taken away just that fast... i fear fire in the home!

what would i take... i would be dumb enough to try to get as much as possible... wife and kid first and formost... then im coming back in after our comp towers... why you ask... sooo many priceless memories... pics, movies, convos from when my wife and i first met ect... also the photo albums for same reason! then pets... i know i would break down and loose my mind if that would ever happen... we have alot of pets... and i know it would be all but impossible to save em all... especially the fish... wich are a huge part of who i am... the very thought of this makes me very sad :( i think i would manage to get everyone out but the fish *sigh* call me dumb but my pets are my children too!!!

I'd get me and the hubby and my pomeranian out -- might grab the laptop simply because it's right at the foot of the bed and has a lot of my life on it.

The 4 cats in the house are on their own. And I'd have to say prayers for the geckos and the cornsnake, the pet rat and the 2 bunnies.

I worked 911 for 6 years .... I'm getting out while I can and I'll cry and grieve for the pets I can't get out. I don't want my family or the firefighters I used to dispatch having to deal with finding me in my dwelling trying to save my pets.

My boys are 5 & 7. I would walk through walls to get them out safely. We actually do refreshers quite frequently on what to do if there is a fire...right down to open your window & jump if necessary.

We only have 6 geckos...if there was time--everyone would get tossed in the exoterra. I think I'd risk losing a few tails over the other alternative.

Now I'm going to go knock on wood & build up some kharma points.

Pillow cases are great for quickly stowing critters. They can still breathe. Just knot the end.

Well, In a fire, I think I would grab the dog and cat if I could, If I did have time, I think I would dump as many geckos as I could into a box we have..if I could get to it....but I am not going to risk Matt or my life to save our geckos seeing as they are on the second floor and there would almost be no way for us to get them out of a fire. :(
