the only reason why i did not write about this sooner was because we were waiting on her blood tests to come in, which came in yesterday.

last sunday, which i was in the bathroom and russ was cooking brunch doodle fell off her perch onto the ground and was flapping all over the place. even though i had never seen a bird have a seizure i knew she was having a seizure. within the next ten minutes she had two more.
i was calling our avain vet, who was on in because it was a sunday, however, they told us to go to a particular emergency animal hospital. we took doddle there, on the way she had no seizure.
they were observing her and she had no seizures. we talked over our options with the vet who told us they were not able to do avian blood tests and such but they wanted to keep her over night in case doodle had anymore seizures so they could give her medicine. so we left her there. she had no seizures while she was there.
early monday morning, russell picked her up from the emergency vet and took her to the avian vet. he left her there, as they wanted to observe her, take some blood for tests and give her an x-ray to look for any heavy metal poisoning. they x-rayed her and she had no signs of heavy metal poisoning. they were going to do ALL kinds of blood tests which were going to have to be done out of house, so it was going to take three days. in the mean time they asked us how we cared for her and her diet and blah blah blah. one thing they did recommend was instead of an all pellet and veggie diet, they wanted us to give them a half seed and half pellet diet and veggies . they said that they wanted us to only get certified organic seed and grain (like from whole foods) the certified organic foods are tested for micro toxins and there could be a chance that these micro toxins could have caused her seizure (we gave her pet store seed as a treat sorta thing. the pet store stuff is not tested). ok so we got the grains and seeds (they gave us a list) and they have been eating this since then.
now fast forward to tomorrow. blood tests came back excellent except one minor thing. her white count was slightly up. the doctor said it was not even enough to think it had anything to do with the seizure. we are going to give her a small round of antibiotics, since her white count was slightly up. so we are hoping this was an isolated incident. the vet said that if she has other seizures that the only other thing is that she might be epileptic. if that is the case they have medicine for it. i hope she does not have epilepsy but if she does i am glad to know there is some kind of treatment.

Aw, Robin. What a crappy situation. My best advice to you though, having worked with a lot of exotic species and especially birds that have seizures, is to have the blood drawn almost immediately after the seizure happened. In this case, it had been an entire day since the seizure that the blood was drawn. Thats enough time for blood values to increase and decrease. So I would tend to agree that the White Cell count had nothing to do with the seizure. I've always recommended a pellet/veggie/fruit diet, so I really can't comment on the suggestion regarding seed.

If she has another seizure, she needs to have the blood drawn immediately for the values to be entirely accurate.

I remember seeing one of my animals have a seizure unfortunately he passed away right after, its heart wrenching not being able to help them. Thankfully the blood tests came back good for the most part hopefully there are no more seizures for doodle, good to know about the bird seeds though my boyfriends mom raises africans and such I dont know if she knew this or not. Hope you have a less stressfull week this week gotta suck waiting on tests :(

yeah we had to take her to the emergency vet (since it was sunday) and they are only able to give supportive care for birds not do blood tests and stuff (maybe they are not experienced with birds or possibly no equipped with that kind of stuff) i do not know but yeah if it happens again they want to see her ASAP

I hope Doodle is doing well now. (love the name btw - my birds name has morphed into doodle also)

One thing that came to mind when I read your original post is that Russ was cooking brunch... Was he using a teflon pan by chance? I'm sure you know this already but teflon fumes can be deadly toxic to birds if heated too high. I"m sure that wasn't the original cause but I thought I would mention it anyways...

no he was using a regular pan. i know about the teflon thing. we do not use any teflon pans anymore. she has had another seizure since this post was made but other than that is completely healthy. perhaps she is mildly epileptic?
