Look what my youngest hatchling did during his very 1st shed. He was going crazy trying to get his skin off and was biting himself all over. He even bit over 1/2 of his tail off. Goofy baby.

Holy cow Amanda!!! I've never seen one BITE its own tail off!!

Is there a humid hide for the little nutso? Maybe the itchy skin just drove him over the edge???

Yes, there's a humid hide, but all the babies seem to ignore it and all huddle under the coconut. (there's 4 babies in this tank and none of them fight or anything) I just think "Ziggy" didn't know what to do with himself so he started desperately trying to get his shedding skin off. He was also running all over the tank, rubbing his body against the floor, as if trying to scrape the skin off that way too.
So now how long before his tail is a normal length again? I read about 8 months. Is this accurate?

OMG - Stuck shed is one of my fears with my first 2 hatchlings. Even with a humid hide, I mist their enclosure anyway when they're shedding, and also help them out with a wet Q-Tip. It's a lot of work.

Well, I guess he went a little extreme trying to get off the skin.lol. Just put some non-medicated vasaline on it to help keep the regrowth moist so the tail grows back as normal as possible. It will probably never be the same length again.

Thanks guys. I was thinking that maybe I don't mist their hide often enough. *shrugs*
None of the other babies nor my adults have ever had this problem. I think this baby is "special" lol.....as in special ed. I'll do the vaseline thing as well. Thanks again. This forum is so great.

Just my experiance but I used to have some shed problems every once and a while when I first started then I stopped bugging them, as soon as I could tell they were shedding soon I would give them a day to a day and a half with out even looking in there tubs, and I always mist the enclosure, and keep the moist hide really moist at all times, But I have not had any problems for like 4 years since I just gave them privacey for a day or two when they go into shed thats why they hide its very stressful and and really a private deal for them. After two days if there is skin stuck you can help but it usually will come off when you just let them do there thing which they have been doing for millions of years. All though there is some curcumstances which warrent you helping them, trying to help them and bugging them when ther really is no problem yet any way, usually is what cause there to be problems just my experiance, good luck never seen a gecko loose its tail shedding unless it was on there for like a week and it became necrotic, but this is new to me, good luck just try letting them shed in private and see how that works for you, hope this helps,

take care,

Adam

that sucks i guess when mine starts to shed i better mist it, just misting it mean spraying your whole tank lightly with water?

Just thouight I'd give everyone an update. It's been just over a month, and this is how much Ziggy's tail has grown back. Quicker than I thought!

Did you do the medicated vasaline thing on the tail?

I am wondering because I would think that that stuff could
cause an infection because I thought you wanted a wound to dry out
and scab over, not stay moist and greasy!! :main_huh:

No where to hide, humidly

IMO......
If 4 babies and only one humid hide
(would need misted daily + a few mists up against
the walls of the tank......
Its always going to seem like one is shedding with 4 in there............
All his rubbing actions seem normal except he was too dry and became
stressed to remove it..(IMO)
Try getting a piece of PVC pipe cut to make a 1/2 round tunnel.
It helps them remove the shed.
They will go in it and circle round and round rubbing the walls............
I use them in every one of my set ups since I saw them doing it.
Take care. Good luck on the regrowth......HJ

I soaked my gecko the night before it shed (two nights ago) and when I woke up in the morning she had taken care of it. The first time she shed with me I had to help her. So maybe when you can tell she is going to shed you should give her a warm bath.
