It is a birth defect, and is most likely genetic. IMO, dwarf leopard geckos should not be allowed to breed, but deserve a good home and someone to love them, just like any other gecko!

^Ditto Marcia..I would never breed one if it poped up in my bunch, I would LOVE it anyways though.

I agree that the dwarfs should not be breed. I wonder how well they would do breeding any ways, just due to the fact that their torso is shorter. I'd think there wouldn't be as much room in the stomach area as there would be in a regular leo. So it might cause complications.

I agree, they shouldnt be bred. They probly dont live that long anyway. They look like one big health issue after another, poor thing :(.

Let me play "Devil's Advocate" here for a minute

If it were discovered that there are no internal deformities and it is just a different look-such as the elongated torso on the Giants-why would there be objections to this lizards look?

Yes- it is very different looking but so weren't the giants just as shocking looking when they first appeared on the scene?

That would be saying that larger is OK but smaller is not OK-would it not?
Again-I am saying this with the thought that there are no health problems caused by the shorter torso

I really haven't decided whether I like them or not and I am not looking to buy one but I just had to ask your opinions on this going with the idea that there are no actual physical problems caused by the shorter torso

I've said it before the first time this post came up.

I want one. Not to breed, but just to own.

They're absolutely adorable.

the problem with breeding them is partially the size alone.....could they handle carrying eggs?...would they be able to pass eggs?

I would LOVE to have a dwarf gecko. Even though you cant breed them, something so small is so cuuuuteee. It would be amazing if you could single out a gecko that every time they breed the babies turn out to be dwarfs.

The body looks ugly and one health problem after another. I dont thinks its a morph but a freak accident and if thats the case, I dont feel it should be advertised like its some new morph.

How do you think most new morphs (patternless, albino, giant etc.) come about?

That being said, I still wouldn't breed it for the obvious health reasons, as already mentioned.

I don't think they are ugly but I do see the potential for having problems egg laying. Problems being...would it lay the same size eggs as a non dwarf gecko. There are probably other health issues just as there are with a human dwarf. We may just not know about them. Because it lives in a viv in your house it should do fine in my opinion....in the wild ,however, I don't think it would do so well due to its smaller size.I think they are cute but I would not breed it...not becasue it is smaller but because of the potential health issues that go along with it. With Giants I don't see a problem with them passing eggs with something smaller I see where it could be an issue depending on egg size.Just my opinion.
