Egg weight to determine hatch

I was wondering if anyone has ever used weight to determine the development of embryo? You would assume the egg will gain weight as the embryo forms. You could also maybe get enough data over hatchings to determine approx hatch dates. If anyone has any input it would be appreciated.

I don't think it would really work. They all absorb water during incubation at different rates so the egg weight doesn't equal embryo weight.

Even without the eggs taking on different weights due to water, the actual weight of the egg shouldn't change. The cells are all already inside the egg, it's just a matter of them developing.

I don't think so because all of the cells are already in the egg. In order for the embryo to gain more weight would be to take on more mass from the outside. The eggs do this though, take on mass from the outside. But it's like Mel and Keith said, the eggs take in different amounts of water during incubation.

The egg does not weigh the same immediately after being laid as it does immediately before hatching. It DOES produce more cells. That's how life is created---the cells, for lack of a better word, "reproduce" and create more cells--to make the living being inside the egg.
