What would be the reason for eggs to continually collapse right about the time they are ready to hatch? They keep dying in there and they're fully developed. Any ideas?
Could be that they are going bad but most of the time they will dent in when they get ready to hatch so don't jump to conclusions and just take it easy. How long have then been in the incubator and whats the temps on the incubator?
I'm using perlit. Incubation temp. 81 to 83. no scale so not sure exact ratio of perlite to water but I have it moist but not dripping. The go all the way to about 61 days and then collapse. I give them all day to hatch and they dont. most of the time I feel the egg and they are dead inside. They feel stiff. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. have had this happen to me about 6 times......help. I dont wanna lose any more babies. I have 2 eggs right now that on the 28th it'll be 60 days. should I try pipping an egg on the 28th?
No do not try pipping the egg as they are not like snakes and they will die if you pip the egg,you will need to just let them hatch on there own,Good luck with the rest of the eggs and babies.
How many males/females are you breeding? I ask because if all the eggs come from the same pair, maybe there's a genetic problem. Last season I had about 10% of my eggs either not hatch and have fully developed babies inside or I found the hatchling just out of the egg and dead. I don't know why. This year is going better.
Here are some suggestions of things to try:
--make sure your females especially are properly supplemented. That's easier said than done because people seem to have very different ideas of how to supplement
--Clean out your incubation containers thoroughly and put in fresh perlite. I don't think there is necessarily a bacteria in there, but it doesn't hurt to do that
--Make sure your incubator temperatures are as steady as possible.
I only have one pair breeding right now. Leo and Lilly. I've been doing everything as right as I possibly can. after the first baby died in the egg this year I changed the perlite for the rest of the eggs in the container. the next clutch the same thing happened. so I really have no idea. I've been keeping the temp. as perfectly stable as I can. It may fluctuate like 2 degrees but theres not much i can do about it due to the incubator I use. As for the adults the mom and dad are both in perfect health. I give them crickets and meal worms every day and dust them with pure cal just about ever day and d3 cal like every other. I've also given her a very very small pinky mouse close to once a month thinking that may help if she isn't getting enough supplements. Thank you everyone for the responses. thanks for the good luck. I'm crossin the fingers for the 28th!!!! Also I have a new girl that I'm going to introduce to my other male soon which is the only hatchling I got last year. Maybe there eggs will hatch....
the way I supplement my leos food is mon-thursday I give pure osteo form calcium and friday they get calcium with d3 and saturday and sunday they are given herptivite which is vitamin and minerals,I didn't see that you used any vitamin and mineral suplement which you should give to your leos as they need it.
I think it might be to much water IMO most times when babies die fully formed in the egg is because the presence of to much moisture. make 1 container using less water with 1 egg and then do it how you have been and let us know what happens.
Wow.... I had no clue that putting too much water in the medium would cause the babies to DIE!!! I knew it was bad, but could never find out why putting too much water in there was bad.... wow... knowledge, knowledge, knowledge... I love this forum.
I give my geckos reptivite about once a week too. I really think it was too much water as well. I have the two eggs that were with the others that have died already this year in one container and I have two other clutches in a dif. container and they have much less water than the other did so I think they should have a good chance.....we'll have to wait and see.
Usually they collapse due to lack of moisture. Put a tiny bit of water in the corner of the egg container (1oz) wait 24 -48 hrs to see if they puff out again. I have had this happen before and we put about 1 oz of water in the corner and shut the lid. Usually the eggs regain their shape and everything is fine. If they die because eggs are forming dents too early, chances are there isn't enough moisture to soften the shell and they can't pip the egg so they drown in their own fluid. We use Hatchrite and Glad container's to incubate. I only open the container once per week air it out. Good luck to you
Wow good stuff to know! Thank you Nate! Just wanted to update everyone: MY EGG IS HATCHING!!!! This egg is from the 4th clutch. It was one of the newest eggs in the container when I was having all the babies dying. So these eggs were caught the soonest with the change in amount of water. I'm soooo happy right now!!!!!!!!
