Escape Plan

Tonight there was a tornado watch where I live. Between this and the horrible story of the fire I got to thinking. Does anyone have an emergency evacuation planned for their reptiles and if so what does it consist of. I have the beginings of a plan. I am going to the store and purchasing as many critter keepers as i have geckos and as many heating pads. My turtle lives in a giant rubbermaid bin so all I have to do is put the top on him and we are outta here. I was just wondering if anyone else has any kind of plan for their babies in case of an emergency/

In the case of a tornado, it depends how much warning I have. We had a tornado warning here in Athens just a couple of hours ago. In general, you may only have a minute or so to get to safety if a tornado hits. In that case, the obvious priority is to my own life. It would take too long for me to save even a few of my geckos and then run for cover.

If I have adequate time (ie. 3 minutes or so), I would simply grab my coat with a lot of zippered pockets and stuff geckos in my pockets. They wouldn't be comfortable, but they'd be alive. We temporarily store birds in large socks all the time for bird banding and you could do the same for geckos. You could also get some snake bags and use those. Anything with a lid would take too long. You need to throw and go.

great idea, i would simply use a pillow case and start loading it up with geckos. like you said they wont be confy but they will be alive

I think I would go the pillowcase route as well...maybe i'd find a box or an old purse or something, but whatever it is, if it doesn't have a hole in it, my geckos can handle it.

Then there's my 2 geriatric pit bulls and 3 ferrets...the ferrets cage is on wheels so that's a good thing...and the dogs follow me & TJ everywhere...my neighbor has no animals and works for the police, so he'd help me out too. Scary thought, but something that should be considered when large amounts of electricity are being used.

I've given this thought but haven't really decided on anything. I'd probably grab the critter keeper that I keep right next to my tanks, grab whatever hide my geckos are in, stuff them in the critter keeper, throw the cat in a pillow case, and run out the door while trying to put the top on the critter keeper. lol

It's not ideal but I have a Cool Whip tub with a plastic canvas lid, there was a fire drill last weekend in my dorm so we got to do a test run. Alternatively, if the gecko is in a hide and you have a few second to spare, stuff the hide with the gecko inside into a pair of pantyhose. It clings to the hide so they can move in the hide but not get too banged up crawling around in a sack.

around here we dont get tornatos but if there was a fire i do have a plan. my window is right above the ac unit and my geckos and tarantulas are maby about 5 foot from there in the closet. almost all are in kritter keepers( except the geckos) and i can easyly place them all out the window ontop of the ac unit and the geckos in my pockets. i could have them all out in under 2 mins maby less! thats 26 tarantulas and 2 geckos! and my pacman! lol

Thank God you live in CA? I'd rather have random acts of God that maybe take out a house here and there in Georgia than earth shattering quakes that level whole cities. o_O I always lose at gambling. You probably don't want me in your state. ;-)

Yeah you got me thinking... it's easy for some if there's only a few, but once you hit 10+ and you breed them it's easy to become 20-30, then the number just keep soaring. What do you do with 100's of them in such an emergency situation?

I better think of something soon as well... just to be sure.

XDDDD I find the cat in the pillow case funny. Haha
Due to our location here I don't have storms that get that severe. HOWEVER! If so, I would grab anything I could find to place my animals in. Taking into consideration that one animal could eat the other. O.O
