IYO what is the best 'classic' book you have read?

I wasn't much of a reader growing up...6th grade reading teacher made us read a book and write a book report each week...didn't have any love for reading in school after that.

Anyway, now that I'm 41 I'm going back and reading some of the 'classics' I never read.

Currently reading 'Of Mice and Men' and am enjoying it...probably moreso since I'm not being forced to read it by some mean teacher (did I mention I'm a teacher)?

Just curious as to what your favorite 'classic' novels are.

I loved, absolutely loved, Tess of d'Urbervilles, had to read it for a class but the professor made it interesting; the symbolism and imagery in that book is amazing. Count of Monte Cristo was good, I read it in high school just because I wanted to and loved it.

Not technically 'classics' but Watership Down and Plague Dogs were really good. They're by the same author, Richard Adams.

Of Mice and Men makes me so sad! I won't give away the ending, though, in case you don't know it..just prepare to have some tissues ready

Holy Moly I remember Fahrenheit 451! I loved that book is was kinda creepy though, lol.

I'm not sure if these are classics but I like them; The Catcher and the Rye, The Scarlett Letter, The Stranger, Frankenstein, Doctor Faustus (loved it)..

Besides that I like self help books, books in Oprah's Book Club and anything that V.C. Andrews wrote. :D .. I'm a Nerd I know..

I've read quite a few of the books mentioned above (Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.) but never really enjoyed them much, since they were required readings for school. So the only "classic" novel I've read on my own was Dracula. Though I am a huge bookworm, I tend to read books that are a little more current.

Oh yeah! How could I forget Gone With the Wind???? I've read that dozens of times. I like rereading the old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys too. Not really intellectual reading but I enjoy them at the beach or for light reading.
