I have come across a few posts that have got me wondering about female Leo ovulation. Do the female Leos actually pass unfertilized eggs or how does all that work?

I know if they get inseminated they can hold that sperm for about a year or until it's time to fertilize the eggs, but wasn't sure if they didn't get inseminated (I'm not interested right now in breeding them). Do they break down the egg and pass it or what?

sometimes they will pass (or lay) the infertile eggs and other times their body will absorb it.

Interesting. So does the infertile egg look like a normal egg and do I need to be cautious about getting these out and disposing of them (rotting or anything)? Also do they tend to lay them or absorb them at a certain time of year?

yes it can look like a normal egg. many times they are laid outside the lay box and they end up shriveling up and drying out (they look ugly) LOL. any infertile eggs i got i just throw em away. as far as absorption it depends on the female not the time of year.

Females usualy when they start ovulating!! you will notice that she will start to consume more calcium than usual and will be resting on the hot spot of the tank for longer periods of time... they also create a secretion that males recognises and estimulate him for the sexual encounter... these only happen when females are ready!!! so you will not have to worry about your female giving you eggs with out her beeing ready for it... Sometimes at the beggining of their reproduction cicle they could have infertile eggs that could seem normal at the beggining but will not grow and will start to deteriorate or rought, always leave them atleast a few days before candeling!!! the embrio will start developing when are layed and will have an infertile aperance at the beggining... also you have to keep in mind that females do not nead a male to lay eggs they will start laying eggs as soon as ready! but obviously they wil be INFERTILE... another common thing is that if she doesent lay, their body will absorb the egg back in to her body!!! to have eggs you just nead the right temp. and conditions!! In Puerto Rico were i live i could practicaly be breeding al year long!! like i do!... because we dont have cold winters or anything like that!!! temps. are always perfect to stimulate a sexual reaction... just keep in mind they will nead a at least 7 to 8 month's
to recover before you breed her again! usualy in cold places the best time to start breeding will be in march!!! thats when the ''season'' start for a few friends outside the island... i could keep going... but if you have any concern or comment just let me know!! i will help.... i have been breeding a long time ago! and have read alot.... and will answer with the best of my knoledge! but it will remain as my personal opinion!
