I got a female for my first leo. Shes wonderful, never mean, & eats great. I say it doesn't really matter, get the leo that just pops out to you, get what you want.
The only thing is that males cant be together with another male. Or with a female, unless you want to breed them, & even then the males can be pushy with the females & then you will want to separate them. Most females can be housed together, unless they just have a hate pact between each other.:main_rolleyes:

Like everyone else, I don't find a huge difference in the sex of a leopard gecko. The few things I personally noticed when comparing them or at least the ones I have now are...The males tend to "be out" more often in their enclosure then my females. I found my males easier to "tame" down VS my females. I have one female that is just a CRANK!! Seriously, I open the cage, and she squeeks/barks whatever you want to call it, just by the cage opening. I don't even touch her to often because of this. I have also received more bites from females then males. The best Leopard Gecko I've had though, was a rescued female "wild" (regular) color morph about 6 years ago. I moved and had very little money, and gave her to a friend who then sold her and I have no idea where she is now :( I completely regret doing this, but at the time I couldn't keep her. ANYWAY...She was so NICE!! Friendly, liked being out/handled and climbing around. She was out a lot doing stuff in her cage all the time. I have yet, to get another gecko who was as outgoing and "affectionate" as she was. Either way, see if you can hold a few varieties if your store has more then one. Sometimes you just "click" with one. Whether that is male or female. :)

For some reason, I only have one male and four females(just turned out that way lol). Dusty(male) is huge, 104 grams last time I weighed him. I honestly think that the high point of the day for him is feeding. He won't climb onto my hand, but if I pick him up, he'll chill out on my shoulder for hours, literally. Then there's the complete opposite of him, Amber. She's my problem child, never ate well or packed on the weight. She's always been on the small side, and is quite jumpy. My other three females are very social, two of them will claw at the top of the tub whenever they want to get out(about every day xD), and the other one is coming around.

You can house females together, but they sometimes go off of food when ovulating, make you worry a lot, all that wonderful stuff. Males must be kept seperate from each other, but then you can spend more time with that one leo, socializing him. I picked male.

& another thing (like everyone else has said), if you ever want another leo, which I bet anything you will. I thought I'd only have this 1 female, I got her cause I likes her coloration, but only 2-3 weeks later, I'm already in the middle of paying for another female!! I want them to b housed together so I got another girl. & the whole, not wanting to eat thing, I dont even have this problem(Kirsa is a little piggy), but even though some will go on hunger strikes, you will get used to their seduale. I voted female, but if you have extra tanks & stuff, you could get whatever you want, just keep male by themselves.

i had this same question too. i was wondering whether to get a male or female one. i was leaning towards female, seeing as i'm already addicted and i dont even have my first leo yet :sweatdrop:

but now i'm still torn. i think i will go female, unless a male just looks at me with those big eyes and says "take me home, pick me please!"

lol, i was at pet co and they have about six or seven new leos, and i want to take them all home, male or female!

If you are only going to have a single gecko as a pet, I recommend getting a male. Both males and females make equally nice pets, but females can ovulate and go off food for long periods of time which is frustrating and worrisome. Also, females are at a higher risk of follicular stasis and egg-binding with infertiles.

i agree and voted male too.
if you get a second gecko, get a female and they can be housed together too... once they are the same size, quarantined, etc.

good luck!
