Fill in spaces in ceramic tile with sand?

Hi all,

I finally got tired of seeing Dex get his mouth caught on the repti-carpet so I decided to put ceramic tile in his tank. I went out today, bought some tile and a cutter, and I must say I'm pleased with the results. However I did have to leave a small space (less than 1 cm) at the edge so I can take the tile out when I need to clean. Do you think it would be okay to fill in this space with sand? I can't see it posing any problems as it would only be at the edges of the tank, which are mostly covered by hides, water/food dishes etc. Thanks for any comments!

I use linoleum in my tank, its secured down with glue around the edges of the tank. You can go to any good hardware store & ask if they have any spare linoleum (I got at least 3.5 yards for only $3). Thats what I did, measure the the tank, & then cut what size you need. You can either use velcro, double sided tape or glue like me. Glue is the best thing to use if your not planning to take it out, even for cleaning you don't have to take it out unless its not secured down. It also absorbs heat so they get good belly heat from it.:sunny:

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll stick with ceramic for now as I've just put it down. If I do decide to go with lino, I'll definitely check out a hardware store for spare bits!

When you pull the the tiles up the sand is obviously going to spread, and you will have to refill the gap once you put the tile back in.
