First mating attempt

Ok, I put Marly and Zhului together for the first time; everything seems fine. Marly is gentle and Zhului just let him do whatever he wants. BUT! Marly doesn't seem to know how to finish the job. He did the tail tip rattling, nipping all over, crossed their tails...but then he just slips off as soon as their tails are crossed. That position couldn't be held for more than 2 seconds! Zhului didn't move, but Marly just slips away...

They tried for 45 minutes and I don't think there is a sucessful mating. However, Marly cleaned himself at least 3-4 times already. He even cleaned himself right after he enters Zhului's tank and shakes his tail! I've separated them for now, because I think they both needed some rest, plus Zhului seems to start getting impatient...I can almost see the "come on! Hurry up and get the job done." in her face...Will try again a few hours later.

Miracle! Remember how Zhului hasn't been interested in eating for a week? Well, I just waved a cricket in front of her and she ate it!! Since she resumed eating, do you think it's possible that they might have succeeded in the previous attempt? But they really have only crossed their tails for 1 or 2 seconds, and even though Marly has licked his vent afterwards, I didn't see his hemipenes sticking out.

Exactly how long does the copulation has to be? If she has successfully mated once, will she allow the male to mount her right again?

Just put them together again for the second time, also not successful. Marly was more aggressive, bite harder and was shaking his head a bit; but still didn't do that one last step! Since he was acting rough this time, Zhului initially was still calm, but then tried to walk away from him at the end, so I separated them. Will try again in the weekends.

Is it possible for a gecko to not know how to do the job?

How old is the male? I know with my rabbits even the ones of breeding age sometimes it's a little hard for the first time breeders to hit the spot. I give it another week and try again and boom they get it insted of getting frustraited.

Marly is 8.5 years old, too old? I can see that he is very eager to mate with the girl. I'll put them together again on Saturday, I hope he can think it through in these 2 days...lol.

@Tanleo, I don't want to risk them hurting each other while I'm not around to help, so I can't leave them together unattended for a week.

bonnie it may take several times since this is his first time mating 8.5 years old is not too old. you may way to leave them in there or more time than 45 minutes. i know you are not comfortable with leaving him in there over night but maybe for an hour or two at night while you are getting ready for bed or reading or doing something. also keep an eye on them but also give them a bit of privacy! they will both figure out how to do it :)

So its ok if he keeps on trying non-stop for hours? I'm just worried that Zhului will eventually fight back since Marly is following her around, nipping at her the whole time. When Zhului began to walk around (with Marly closely following), I thought that meant she'd had enough, so I break them apart.

One of my boys is big and eager, seems to get a little rough. So when I put him with a girl that's smaller, he does leave a bite mark on their head or back. It worries me that he will hurt her.. so my bf said soft music and candlelight might settle him down. Of course I told him to get out of my room! :dizzy2:

Try not to worry so much, they are working with instinct. They need some time to get to know each other after all these years. It will happen when they're ready  :)

Ok, I'll let them have the whole of Saturday night; I hope Marly can succeed this time. I checked on Zhului and she has those very faint white specks (bite marks) on every inch of her skin. She ate 4 dusted crickets last night, so that's good.

One question, if I am to leave them together for several hours, shall I keep all the cage furnishing in? So Zhului has places to hide; but on the other hand, if she enters the humid box and Marly followed, there's not much room to escape...yea I know I'm worrying too much, sorry about all these questions.

p.s. I took out everything last night.

Are you sure your female is ovulating? she will more than likely reject him if shes not. They should be fine if you leave them together for a week, the male may keep trying at first, but if the female dosent want to she'll let him know. Worst thing ive ever had happen was my male lost his pride...
