i have two first year females that have both layed two clutches female #1 first clutch layed 2 eggs that felt like water in a bag and second clutch layed one that i thought was good but now it is all dented and feel holow i candled it and it is just yellow with one small pink dot. female #2 was egg bound and layed one hard yellow egg last week then she layed one today that is really soft like a watter in bag. i am giving them both plenty of calcium i have a dish with calcium that is in there all the time and i also dust there food with the calcium and they are both up to nice weight female #1 weighs 68 grams and female #2 weighs 52 grams. what am i doing wrong? any suggestions would be appriciated

i also have a 2006 female that has layed 2 clutches as well and her eggs are doing great all these females were bred to the same male.

Sometimes first year females have difficulties getting it just right. If they continue laying this season they should have at least one fertile clutch, but don't worry if they don't. Next year they will probably do better.

In addition, the red spot is the female portion of the embryo. So at least you know she is fertile. Throw the egg that candled yellow out, it has gone bad. Viable eggs should be a nice pink color and you can often see veins as well. I have also had eggs that seemed limp or partially dented when they're laid. Once in the incubator some of these perk back up and are viable so give it a week or so before you pitch it.

How long has it been since it was layed? It could be dented due to a lack of humidity in the incubator. What is the temp and humidity in your incubator?

All other eggs sound no good and like was said sometimes first year females have a hard time getting it right.

i incubate every egg, no matter the color they candle. as long as, even soft eggs, do not mold they get incubated. the only eggs that dont are the ones that for whatever reason got dried out (like i missed them in the nest box and they dried out beyond saving). i incubate soft eggs and even water filled looking eggs. EVERYTHING gets incubated lol trust me you never know!

one thing though sometimes first year breeders can lay bad clutches or not many clutches or weird eggs. i have two first year females on their 6th clutches, and another on her fourth and then one last female on her very first clutch of the season, so far about 90% of the eggs look good and the 10% that have a more yellow look to them are still in the incubator.
